Hauhaketia te kūmara i te Whānui o te rangi!

It's time for Te Huatahi o te Tau, one of five seasonal ritenga being revived by iwi of Te Taiuru. It takes place in Paengawhāwhā (April–May), during the last quarter moon phase. This year, this period falls on 10–14 April, meaning that now is the perfect time to conduct Te Huatahi o te Tau.

During this ritenga we light a pre-dawn fire, cook kūmara in the embers, and offer the first to Rongo – atua of kūmara and aruhe – in thanksgiving for the autumn harvest, before sharing the rest together around the fire.

Waitangi Day is an opportunity for us to reflect on relationships – between individuals, and between communities – and on the founding document that shapes how we live together in Aotearoa.

Recently, those reflections feel especially significant. At a time when our progress is stalled – and in some cases actively rolled back – the responsibility to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi does not disappear. If anything, it becomes more crucial.

The late Kīngi Tuheitia urged iwi to turn toward one another, to stand together rather than apart. In that spirit, some iwi have chosen to set aside their own traditional Waitangi Day events to attend the national commemoration instead – a visible act of kotahitanga.

Wherever you are in Aotearoa, showing up matters – not just today, but every day. It can look like being present, staying informed, speaking up, and advocating for the values that Te Tiriti represents – even when that is uncomfortable.

Waitangi Day isn't the end of the conversation.

It's a reminder that the work continues – together

Tū mai Rehua, ariki o te rangi e tū nei!

It's time for Te Matiti o te Tau, one of five seasonal ritenga being revived by iwi of Te Taiuru. It takes place at the height of raumati (summer), during the last quarter moon phase of Kohitātea, the eighth lunar month. This year, this period falls on 10–14 January, meaning that now is the perfect time to conduct Te Matiti o te Tau.

During this ritenga we celebrate the work and fruits of summer through a hāngī offering, acknowledge Rehua as ariki of the heavens, and pause to give thanks before continuing our preparations for winter.

The time for Te Matiti o te Tau is almost here. This ritenga takes place during the last quarter moon phases of Kohitātea, which fall between 10–14 January this year. If you're planning your own Te Matiti o te Tau ceremony, now is the time to start making preparations. We'll be sharing more details about the ritenga later this week.

If you've been curious about ritenga and your whānau is already together for the holidays, this could be a great time to give it a go. With everyone gathered and a bit more time on your hands, it's a natural opportunity to connect and celebrate together ☀🌱

E tata mai ana a Whiro o Hakihea 🌑

As the new moon rises tomorrow on the seventh month of the maramataka, Hakihea – or Alpha Centauri – shines brightly in the night sky, guiding us into the heart of raumati. From manu settling into their nests with their young, to long warm days that encourage us into the māra, this is a month of vitality and growth.

Across the motu, different iwi mark this month with their own names, each reflecting the kōrero tuku iho of their rohe.

Andrea Villaflores of Interactionz captured Che’s kōrero at the Mokopuna Ora Conference through this amazing visual illustration. It brings to life the significance of the words that Che spoke – revitalising our traditional ceremonies reconnects us to te ao tūroa, creating important pathways for our tamariki and mokopuna to know their value and place in our communities. Our ways are valid and when we weave tūpuna wisdom into everyday life with our whānau, we can create small special moments that allow our practices to continue through to another generation.

E mihi ana ki a tātau i te mata o Whiro o Whiringa-ā-rangi – the sixth lunar month of the maramataka, when our landscape comes alive with warmth and colour.

Across the motu, different iwi mark this season with their own names, each reflecting the unique character of their rohe. From the blossoming pohutukawa flowers that signal when kaimoana is ready to gather, to the ideal conditions for gardening and fishing, this is a month of abundance and growth.

Yesterday Che delivered the opening address at the Mokopuna Ora Conference 2025, a national gathering dedicated to the wellbeing of mokopuna and whānau through indigenous ways of care and protection.

In his kōrero, he spoke about the power of revitalising traditional ceremonies and rites of passage, and how these practices tell our tamariki something really important: that they are special, that they are valued by their communities. In a world that often tells our mokopuna otherwise, this message is vital.

Reviving tikanga that reconnects us to te ao tūroa and helps our babies reach their full potential 💚

Today marks 50 years since the Waitangi Tribunal was established – half a century of helping Aotearoa better understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it applies in the past, present and future.

The milestone was celebrated at Parliament earlier this week, followed by a two-day conference at Te Tumu Herenga Waka Marae. Yesterday, Che joined a panel alongside Linda Te Aho, Dr Hana O’Regan and Mere Mangu to kōrero about the impact the Tribunal has had for iwi over the years.
