This week, we're looking forward to hearing from Kelvin Smyth of Kelvin Smyth Ltd as our feature speaker at BNI Ferrymead.

Most of us know Kelvin as a highly respected painter who takes real pride in his workmanship, but if you've spent any time around him, you'll know his expertise extends well beyond paint brushes.

I'm expecting an update on the guitar collection, a few recommendations on where to find Christchurch's best coffee, and somewhere in between we'll probably learn a thing or two about building a successful business and reputation.

Kelvin is one of those genuinely good people who always shows up, supports others, and does what he says he'll do. That's exactly why he's become such a valued member of our chapter.

A huge welcome to Oswald Mungwazi Jnr, who officially joined BNI Ferrymead this week!

For those who have been through the induction process, you'll know there is always that moment when the new member reads out the BNI Code of Ethics and the rest of us get flashbacks to what we affectionately call "the cult moment." 😂

I can assure everyone, no Kool-Aid was consumed.

In all seriousness though, those values are a big part of what makes BNI so special, and Ozzie is already living them. You've made a real impact in a very short space of time through your energy, positivity, and willingness to get involved.

We're absolutely stoked to have you officially on board. It already feels like you've been part of the chapter for years.

A big thank you to Faron Poulter from Ray White for being our feature speaker at BNI Ferrymead today.

Real estate isn't just about houses for Faron, it's about helping people through some of life's biggest decisions. His experience, knowledge of the Christchurch market, and down-to-earth approach make it easy to see why so many people trust him.

And of course, we all love a good quiz at Ferrymead...

Although I'm still not entirely convinced it wasn't rigged after the President and Vice President somehow managed to take out the win. Not poor sportsmanship from the rest of us at all... 😂

Kelvin is one of the friendly faces helping welcome visitors into the chapter each week, making sure people feel comfortable, know where they’re meant to be, and get a feel for the energy in the room.

Those first few minutes when you walk into a networking group matter, and Kelvin does a great job of making people feel at ease.

Outside of BNI, Kelvin is the owner of Kelvin Smyth Ltd and has built a strong reputation in the painting industry through quality workmanship and professionalism.

One of the things that makes BNI Ferrymead such a great room to walk into is the people behind the scenes helping create the culture and Graeme Calvert from Maynard Marks is a huge part of that.

As our Visitor Host, Graeme is often the first person visitors meet when they arrive.

Shining a light on our Leadership Team

This week, our VP - Ethan Gerrard from Gerrards Insurance Brokers.

If you know Ethan, you’ll know this pretty quickly… he’s competitive. Not in a loud way… more the quietly tracking-the-numbers, raising-the-standard, let’s-beat-last-month kind. And honestly, it’s exactly what you want in a VP.

He keeps the momentum up, the energy high, and makes sure we’re not just showing up… we’re actually improving.

But just as importantly… he brings the laughs too. Because while we’re all pushing to be better, it never feels heavy, there’s always a bit of banter and a good laugh along the way.

Shining a light on a great example of BNI done properly.

This week, Chloe Sabbadin and Paul Brobyn locked in a 1+1.

Simple on the surface. Powerful when done right.

Because the value isn’t in just “having a chat”

It’s in actually understanding:

• who someone works best with
• what problems they solve day to day
• where you can confidently refer them

That’s the difference between hoping for referrals… and generating them.

The strongest people in the room aren’t always the busiest.

They’re the ones consistently investing time into relationships like this.

1+1s aren’t a nice-to-have.

They’re part of the engine.

This week at BNI Ferrymead we’re looking forward to hearing from Ziggy from Zen Builders as our Feature Presenter.

Ziggy is the Managing Director of Zen Builders, a Christchurch building company specialising in renovations and residential projects. He built the business around clear communication, quality workmanship, and making the building process easier for homeowners.

Anyone who knows Ziggy in the room will know he’s down to earth, thoughtful, and genuinely cares about doing a great job for both his clients and the people around him.

That’s also why we love having Ziggy as part of the BNI Ferrymead group. He brings a calm, practical perspective, supports other members, and understands the responsibility that comes with referrals.
