💍Where did 'tying the knot' come from?

💍There are many theories about the origin of this commonly used expression. One theory is that 'tying the knot' comes from 'Handfasting', where the bride and groom's hands were bound together with a rope, ribbon or cord. This ancient ritual is thought to have originated as a pagan Celtic ceremony between a couple for a fixed 'marriage' period of one year and one day. If the marriage survived that long, they took longer vows.

💍How to include handfasting in a ceremony?
Today, handfasting is often used as a symbolic act during a wedding ceremony, where couples cross over their hands and guests are invited to tie coloured ribbons around their hands, symbolising the joining together of their lives.

❤️ Do you want a marriage celebrant to perform your wedding ceremony?

Most people don't realise that a marriage celebrant is more than just the person who facilitates the ceremony.

❤️ So, what is the role of a marriage celebrant?

The marriage celebrant ensures that your personalised ceremony ticks along smoothly. They guide you from the initial planning stage of your ceremony to the moment you say "I do" – and everything in between.

❤️ And what does 'everything in between' entail?

After the initial meeting to discuss your ideas for the ceremony, the marriage celebrant advises on arranging the legalities, writes a ‘draft’ of your ceremony and helps with writing wedding vows, suggests music and readings, right through to ensuring everything and everyone is in place for the big day.

What’s the difference between a Registry Wedding or a Personalised wedding ceremony?

Registry weddings in New Zealand are much smaller and simpler than personalised weddings. While you can choose the location for your registry wedding, you must travel to the celebrant or an agreed venue no more than 10 minutes from the celebrant’s home. Your guest numbers are limited to 20, and you must also provide two witnesses.

Registry weddings follow a prescribed script and take around 10 minutes. These ceremonies are performed weekly within business hours, 9 am to 5 pm; they are not permitted on weekends or public holidays.

If you want a ceremony outside of these times and to include personal vows and other details, you need to find a celebrant, of your choice, to conduct a personalised ceremony. A personalised wedding ceremony takes about 30 minutes, sometimes longer.

Take inspiration where you can, but be sure to make your wedding your own rather than a carbon copy of something you’ve seen someone else do. And don’t ever feel like you need to include something in your wedding day just because it’s always been done that way. Make decisions based on what’s important to you as a couple when deciding on how your dream wedding will look.
