SUBANTARCTIC SKUA

Last week a member of the public kindly reported a Subantarctic Skua/Hākoakoa at Point Kean on the Kaikōura Peninsula. The skua had been sighted immobile for two days, being mobbed by gulls (which recognised an avian predator).

Thank you to Trust volunteers Cormac and Joey for acting as our wonderful wildlife responders, ensuring the skua was immediately rescued. Thanks to Ben (Trustee) for enabling transfer, courtesy of Hanmer Cheviot Couriers Ltd.

The skua was underweight and suffered from a beak injury, requiring transfer to the South Island Wildlife Hospital for further diagnostics and specialist veterinary care.

The subantarctic skua is classed as Nationally Vulnerable. Alongside giant petrels, skua are a top avian predator in the Southern Ocean and subantarctic islands. Not regularly seen from mainland New Zealand, they are strikingly large and distinctive birds with 1.5m wingspans.
