There’s something incredibly special about being a small, independent, family service ❤️

We don’t have a huge marketing team or a massive advertising budget. So when someone recommends Passing Paws at Home euthanasia to a friend, a family member, a neighbour or someone they know who is facing the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to their beloved loved , it genuinely means the world to us.

Remembering the gentle soul Eddie, we would like to share some beautiful words from his family❤️

Eddie came to us at 8 weeks old, a proud and confident little guy who flew down from the North Island in a big crate with a little pink blanket. That pink blanket stayed with him to the end. He was named by my nephews in honour of Sir Edmund Hillary for the snowy mountains he climbed.

Eddie was a clever, curious and stubborn puppy. Luckily he immediately bonded with Gizmo, one of our older rescue dogs. They were inseparable. Gizmo took him under his wing and showed him how to navigate the dog world with a little more ease.

Eddie had the most soulful eyes. So big, dark and deep. You could tell there was a lot more to him than just a goofy Boxer. He was very observant and alert. He missed nothing. He took on the household roles of guardian, timekeeper and compliance officer. I swear, if he could wear a hat, it would be a hard hat, and he’d carry a clipboard.

Eddie had challenges with his health and behaviour. Because of him, I learned to be an owner who paid attention, kept notes, sought help and asked questions. He taught me the importance of advocating for my pets, navigating healthcare systems and understanding the value of good nutrition.

He will always be in our hearts. We miss his zoomies and his intense curmudgeon like stares with deep Boxer breaths when we weren’t following the rules. It’s not the same without the flurries of white fur and litres of watery slobber spread from his water bowl. We love you Eddie bear🥰

Copper was a much-loved boy who found so much happiness in the simple things in life. He especially loved spending time in Kaikōura, enjoying the beautiful surroundings and making special memories with his family❤️

His favourite things included chasing his beloved tennis ball, happily accepting treats, and, most of all, spending his days alongside his dad. Whether they were working together or simply enjoying each other’s company, Copper was happiest when he was by his dad’s side.🐕

A loyal companion with a heart full of love, Copper leaves behind many treasured memories of adventures, treats, tennis balls, and the special bond he shared with his family.

Forever loved, forever missed, and always remembered. 💛🐾

If you have children and your navigating pet loss, you’re navigating two things at once… their grief and your grief. 💕

The weight of trying to help them through something you’re barely holding together yourself.

That’s hard… really hard.

So we thought we would list some books that may help. Not because they fix anything, but because sometimes a book says what we can’t find words for. Also a character going through the same thing makes kids feel less alone.

For ages 3-7:

“When a Pet Dies” by Fred Rogers. Gentle and honest. Addresses what kids are actually feeling about loss.

“The Goodbye Book” by Todd Parr. Funny and colourful. Helps kids see loss as part of life, not something shameful or scary.

For ages 5-10:

“Goodbye Mog” by Judith Kerr. A beautiful story about a beloved cat’s final days. It’s realistic and touching without being traumatic.

“I’ll Always Love You” by Hans Wilhelm. About a mouse who spends time with his friend before she dies. It celebrates the relationship, not just the sadness.

Reading together opens conversation. Kids ask questions… and slowly they understand that grief is just love with nowhere to go.

Until you find ways to honour it.

On Matariki, we were gifted this beautiful rainbow at our Passing Paws remembrance room. It felt like a gentle reminder that love never truly leaves us.

Wookie, a much-loved 13-year-old boy, found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Whether it was heading out for a walk or stretching out in a sunny spot for a peaceful sunbathe, he embraced every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors 🏜

A loyal companion through and through, Wookie was happiest when he was close to his human. He could often be found faithfully following from room to room, always wanting to know what was happening and making sure he never missed a moment. And if food happened to be involved, Wookie was guaranteed to be nearby, hopeful that a tasty treat might come his way.

His gentle loyalty, loving nature, and constant companionship made him an irreplaceable part of the family. 🥰Though he has crossed the rainbow bridge, Wookie’s presence will forever be felt in the sunshine, on every walk, and in the hearts of those who loved him.

Remembering the adventurous Sox 🐕
Sox was a much-loved farm companion who spent nine years by his human’s side on dairy farms. While he wasn’t a working dog himself, he never missed a day on the job and was always ready to come along for the ride🛻

One of Sox’s favourite pastimes was chasing the milk tanker and everyday was a daily adventure that never seemed to lose its excitement. When he wasn’t keeping an eye on farm life, he could usually be found with his beloved companion, affectionately known as “Lamb Lamb”🐑 or his ball🥎, one his most treasured possession and source of endless entertainment. He later moved into town to continue his adventures and explore new horizons.

Sox was a loyal friend, a constant companion, and a much-loved member of the farm family. The paddocks will feel a little quieter without him, but the memories of his happy spirit and faithful presence will live on forever.

Run free, sweet Sox. Forever loved and always remembered. 💛🐾
