Chronic back pain isn't just a physical problem. Research shows that how you think about your pain plays a bigger role in your recovery than almost anything else. Stress, anxiety, fear of movement, and negative thought loops amplify our pain signals and our brain turns up the volume.
The good news? You can turn it back down.
3 brain exercises that actually reduce back pain:
1. When pain flares, pause and label what you're feeling — "I'm stressed”, “I’m scared", "I'm catastrophising." Simply acknowledging emotions non-judgmentally takes the wind out of their sails and calms your nervous system.
2. Redirect your attention. Your brain can only hold one thought at a time. Shift your focus to something sensory and present — the warmth of the sun, birdsong, the light reflecting off the tree-leaves shimmering in the breeze, the smell of coffee. Less mental bandwidth on pain = less pain.
3. Manage your breathing. Inhale and exhale slowly for 4 counts each way. This isn't just relaxation — it's active nervous system regulation that directly reduces pain intensity.
Well-placed movement and mindset. That's the secret combination that gets you out of the pain cycle for good.
