Hydro power has long played a role in NZ.
Oamaru used to have reticulated drinking and fire water scheme that took water from the Waitaki River 50km away from the town center. The scheme was constructed in 1880 with substantial investment in water races, tunnels, aquaducts, piping and the like, and had a "spare" 350hp of pressure available on delivery to Oamaru. This was used to power small Pelton turbines as shown in the photo for mechanisation of industry in the town center. Oamaru businesses therefore were early adopters of renewable energy, that would otherwise have been traditionally steam powered. By 1916, this spare horsepower was used to create AC electricity and made Oamaru the 4th town in NZ with AC power. I'm not sure if the machine shown has it origins in the Pelton Wheel Company in ANDRITZ history, nevertheless, it is still quite an interesting engineering feat, that is perhaps little known.
