The upper grey component can move up and down only, governed by the tracks shown inside the upper housing. The blue component is the cam follower that moves up and down whilst being forced to turn 1/4 revolutions at a time. This allows a step motion where the cam follower shifts between a high and low position everytime the diabetic pen pushes down on the upper cam.

The Rapid Cap inner workings: A series of radial cam and follower components and tracks that allow for a double press action to clamp and release the diabetic pen needle cap.

The client wanted the Rapid Cap to be able to operate using a single hand. This discounted numerous mechanisms but ultimately made for a very user friendly and intuitive product.

The Rapid Cap is an assistive device for safely removing and replacing the protective inner needle cap of ultra fine diabetic pen needles. It is invaluable to users with sensory or motor conditions who find this task difficult, as well as carers, nurses and others at risk of 'stick injuries'.

Sound simple...not so, this tricky little product took some serious development to get right. More to come.
