Worn tyres don't always look worn. That's what makes them dangerous.

Tread depth is what gives you grip in the wet, and it's the first thing to go as tyres age. The legal minimum in New Zealand is 1.5mm, but braking distance starts increasing well before you get anywhere near that.

Here's a simple check. Place a 20c coin into the tread groove. If you can see the rim of the coin, your tyres are getting close to needing replacement.

Notice your car doesn't grip the way it used to? Your tyres might be telling you something.

Here's a quick way to check. Grab a 20c coin and pop it into the tread. If you can see the bottom of the coin, your tread's too low and your tyres need replacing.

Worn tyres mean longer stopping distances and less control, especially in the wet. If yours fail the test, don't wait on it.
