This is a very exciting, and special, post for us to write...

After 14 years of strategic support for NfPs across Aotearoa, including over 2,000 conversations with donors and work with 250 Boards, we're excited to share the phrase that best captures our practice... ‘Applied Philanthropy™’

Applied Philanthropy™ is the term we use for the practice of embedding philanthropy within an organisation, using fundraising mechanisms applied strategically over an extended period. The approach is modular. Its components can be sequenced, reordered, and scaled to the organisation, which makes it applicable to a not-for-profit of any size. The work is undertaken concurrently with the fundraising itself rather than as a preliminary exercise, so the structure is built through practice.

In a nutshell, this is philanthropy embedded inside the organisation, not bolted on.

Applied Philanthropy™ is built while the NfP is still fundraising and can fit around existing elements. It runs in three modules and we go gently, but at pace

🔸 Vision and Fundraising Priorities. Alignment. Shared Language. Governance and long-term Strategy.

🔸 Fundraising Strategy. Three-year, multi-revenue stream, with targets and the first 90 days mapped.

🔸 Programme Development. The big build, alongside you. Testing, directing, handing over, and reporting up for governance decisions as we go, not at the end. Gifts in Wills, Major Gifts, Corporate Partnerships & Capital Campaigns.

Donors want to give big to your long-term strategy and to see it funded and governed properly. That's what charities want too. Applied Philanthropy™ is what will enable that

We are proud as punch, and can’t wait to share this beautiful practice even further.

We invite you to have an honest review of your own fundraising; do you truly capture and deliver on donor-intent, or is fundraising connected to marketing and can be a bit transactional? 🤔

What structure do our not-for-profits have to truly capture donor intent over twenty, fifty, or a hundred years?

At the time of writing, September 2026, there is very little reliable NZ research to help us understand the accurate % of legacy gifts, where the charity was informed of the gift prior to the donor passing.

Looking overseas to Britain:
When the legacy databases of sixteen large UK charities were examined
- 14% of donors had told the charity the gift was coming.
- 35% came from recognised supporters who had never said a word about it.
- 52% came from people apparently unknown to the charity altogether.

Over half are considered 'invisible legators'.

Decisions about charitable bequests are often made quietly, without the charity, or even the donor's family, knowing.

By opening more conversations about this subject, and helping NFPs prepare fully for this possibility, we can, as a sector, become more robust in handling these situations. This allows us to fully lean into donor intent and ensure that generous Kiwis' gifts are truly being invested in the desired way.

What structure do NZ's NFPs need to have to truly capture donor intent over twenty, or fifty years?

Do you think New Zealand has a generosity problem? We don't...

New research from Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand has given us useful insights on this topic...

Of more than 3,000 people surveyed (who already give to charity):
- 52.3% were interested in leaving a charitable gift in their will.
- 17.4% said they had already included one.

Yet the best national estimate is that only around 6% of New Zealand wills include a charitable gift.

There is a gap worth understanding.

When we talk about Gifts in Wills, we often look to lawyers and financial advisers. Their role is important: they advise their client and help structure their giving.

But someone needs to be on the charity side too.

Someone who knows where the organisation is going, builds the donor relationship, understands what matters to them and makes sure their wishes can be delivered.

That role is called Planned Giving, which includes Major Gifts and Gifts in Wills, built around the donor relationship.

The generosity is there. The interest is there. And around $27 billion passed through New Zealand estates in 2024.

We have advisers to help people structure their giving.

Who is doing the relationship job inside our charities?

What happens when you die? What happens to the money you leave behind? Our founder Sarah has written a perspective piece on this topic. A key observation that shapes our understanding of the size of this crucial income stream might surprise you!

'What we cannot see... The register is not the sector... We are now more than a decade without an independent national picture of what people give here in Aotearoa.'

TFA in a Pantone Palette.

Just like the causes we support, our brand colours have strong roots and are woven across all areas of New Zealand. Each shade reflects a corner of Aotearoa. This is a reminder that good work starts by knowing where you stand! Happy Monday everyone!

🔅 Deep Teal represents the East Cape - the Gorge, a place of connected sacred spaces.
🔅 Amazon captures Arthur's Pass and Jack's Hut, tucked deep in the mountains.
🔅 International Orange reflects Tongariro National Park -
the Red Crater and volcanic slopes, fire in the land.
🔅 Peach speaks to Cromwell, the heart of fruit country.
🔅 Unbleached Silk echoes the Marlborough Sounds, where mist settles quietly on the water.

At TFA, we don't see philanthropy as just theory, as just an approach or just a 'way of being'. When philanthropy is truly applied, all parts of the ecosystem flourish.

We are guided by the deed, vision and purpose. We have a duty of care to provide thoughtful advice with careful consideration for the trust deed and the long-term success of the charity. Everything we design exists to strengthen the charity and advance its purpose.

Ngā mihi o Matariki.

Today in Aotearoa New Zealand we mark Matariki, the rising of the Matariki star cluster in the winter skies, marking the start of the Māori New Year.

This day is much more than a public holiday – it is a time for celebration, reflection and connection. Matariki offers us a moment to pause and consider the importance of all that has brought us to this point, how that has prepared us for where we are now, and to consider where we are going in the year ahead.

This year’s Matariki theme of Matariki herenga waka (the gathering of canoes) encourages inclusion, multiculturalism and togetherness – spending time with others, learning and sharing.

That is an ethos that TFA espouses every day.

One of the things we treasure most in our work is the opportunity we are given to support the unique charities of New Zealand Aotearoa, and their service to our communities. We spend our working time in relationship – not just on one day, but every day - meeting dedicated people, learning about them and from them, and offering our own knowledge and commitment in return.

We know that we achieve our best successes in life when we walk in partnership with those around us.

Manawatia a Matariki; celebrate the Matariki.

Hank Rosso said that “Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving," and this is the philosophy that sits at the heart of how we think about fundraising at The Fundraising Agency.

For many fundraisers, and the organisations they serve, fundraising can feel difficult. Targets, pressure, uncertainty and competing priorities pull us away from the reason we are there in the first place.

Yet Hank Rosso understood something important. When we focus on the donor and connect what we do with what matters most to them, we create something much bigger than a single transaction; we create the opportunity to participate in something that matters to them as much as us.

That opportunity gives a donor joy. It comes from helping address suffering, creating opportunity, protecting what matters and building a better future for others.

The organisations we work with respond to some of society’s most significant challenges. Fundraising, viewed through a philanthropic lens of the opportunity given and the relationship created, creates a pathway for people to participate in that work.

Fundraising is the mechanism by which you enable people to connect with what matters to them, authentically and naturally, but the strongest fundraising outcomes rarely come from fundraising alone.

They emerge when governance, leadership, volunteers, staff and supporters are all aware of their role in the ecosystem and committed to overall purpose. Your supporters see it, feel it and want to align with it. You cannot always point to the exact moment when it happens, but you can feel the difference. Relationships deepen and greater support follows.

This is the philosophy and framework within which TFA works.

This is where the joy of giving begins.

Next week is NZ National Volunteer Week, and TFA are getting in early because we want to show the love to the volunteers that keep our charities going, and our communities flourishing.

From lifeguards to street collectors, retail assistants to referees, and other roles (including governance members) too numerous to mention, volunteers are the heart-blood of literally thousands of NZ schools, not-for-profits and charities.

Without volunteers, our society simply would not function. Charities NZ reports that in 2025, 170,000 of us collectively volunteer 1.4 million hours every week. Valued at even living wage levels ($28.95), that is $40,530,000 per WEEK ($2 billion+ per year)!https://www.charities.govt.nz/__data/assets/pdf_file/0028/58276/Charities-Volunteer-Snapshot-2025.pdf

At The Fundraising Agency we see firsthand the dedication of volunteers, every time we talk with a charity’s Board about strategy and their fundraising future; whenever we run focus groups to understand if messaging around cause and impact really resonates; and when we support Fundraising Committees to enact elements of the giving programmes that will set their favoured cause up for an aspirational future.

If you are a volunteer, we see you and we thank you for giving so generously to the causes that mean so much to us all.

If you are a volunteer, we’d love you to share why you volunteer your time. Who knows – you might inspire someone else to join you!
