Although the governments most recent budget lacked significant investment to address climate change and biodiversity loss, rail made some important gains. Extension and improvements of the track network is a big climate win. It would be awesome if more main centres could be connected by train. My dream would be for a Nelson to Christchurch line that would take a large number of trucks off the road and increase the very limited long distance transport options.

The new funding will focus on locally assembled wagons and upgrades to the KiwiRail network.
