EQ had the privilege of talking with Aaron Mauger about the influence of his ancestors, deep roots in Samoan, Cook Islands and Rurutu heritage, and cultural values shaping his leadership philosophy.
Aaron shared stories of Pasifika resilience, drawing parallels between voyaging navigators and effective leadership. Highlighting their collaborative spirit, and navigating vast oceans by reading patterns in stars, wind, clouds, and waves – a testament to their keen observation and adaptability.
We explored the fala (woven mat), signifying family, grounding and safety. The idea of roll out the mats; so we can come together, dialogue and create real care for each other.
The emphasis on understanding one's heritage resonated with our team, underlining the role our origins play in informing our purpose and shaping a more compassionate future.
Not only are we lucky to have NZ Europeans and Māori -- NZ has been the home to Cook Islanders, Fijians, Niueans, Samoans, Tahitians, Tokelauans, Tongans, Tuvaluans, and many more Pacific Island communities for over 700 years. 🌴
The Pacific islands occupy a vast oceanic region that covers almost 20% of the Earth’s surface, and is home to the world’s largest concentration of microstates - so it is no surprise that tradition, obligations and power structures are different for every group.
Aaron left us with a proverb by Fijian writer Epeli Hau'ofa: "We should not be defined by the smallness of our islands, but the greatness of our oceans. We are the sea, we are the ocean, Oceania is us."
Perfectly capturing the unifying force for the Pacific region and its island countries - the ocean. A sense of common identity that has connected generations of different nations.🌊
For those seeking an improved understanding of different Pacific cultures, we highly recommend connecting with Aaron.
Thanks again, Aaron.
