What length should CVs be?
I am often asked if CVs should be kept to two pages.
Many of these questions seem to be based on online searches, where the majority of samples are American resumes, which are often one or two pages. The expectations for CVs in New Zealand are slightly different. They are definitely shorter now than they used to be, and often two pages, but it is not an obligatory length. In the majority of cases, CVs should be no longer that three pages, but there are exceptions to that too.
In the past a CV covered your whole work history. Currently, the focus is on what skills you have now (rather than when you left school), so focus on the last 10 – 15 years. If anything from earlier than that is relevant for the role you are seeking, then add it into the Skills section, or in your Employment section, without dates.
Obviously if you are just finishing school or university, the focus is different, and more details of your qualifications and training need to be included, along with any part time paid or voluntary roles you have had. If your CV is only one page, that is fine. Don’t try to pad it out. Keep it short and to the point, with the focus on your ability.
