The future of some volunteer fire brigades is in doubt as they struggle to recruit and train officers to take the reigns.

Volunteer Fire and Emergency New Zealand Brigades may not have fire engines in the future as the organisation looks at how best to serve communities.

Very kind courtesy & acknowledgement of the NZ 111 Emergency website - Ex Dunedin unit, now 341 Colac Bay, temporarily stationed at Riverton. We send our very best wishes and regards to all of the Western Southland Volunteer Fire Brigades for the magnificent job they do serving our communities......

It was a busy night for Coastal Southland brigades last night with Colac Bay and our neighbours from Orepuki and Riverton all attending a large garage fire between Colac and Orepuki. We were slightly delayed getting on the road for this incident, having to respond with only three fire fighters due to a shortage of personnel and our officer following shortly after from Riverton. While the garage was a total loss, we managed to stop it spreading to the adjoining house. Call #4 for 2018.

What do we do when the power goes out during a training night...? Carry on under torchlight of course!
