What is frost fighting?
In Central Otago, spring nights can drop below freezing just as new vine shoots burst into life. Those tiny green shoots emerging now will become next year's vintage, but they're incredibly vulnerable to frost.
When temperatures plummet, our team is out in the vineyard long before dawn working to protect those delicate shoots. It's called frost fighting, and it's one of the most important jobs of the season.
Why it matters: Young shoots are vulnerable. Frost can damage future grape bunches. A few freezing hours can impact the entire season's work.
It's one of the many reasons great Central Otago Pinot Noir is truly grown, not just made, and some nights, great w**e starts at 2am.
