AraHina Consultancy Professional facilitator and leadership coach that provides services through a Tikanga Māori lens

I am an independent consultant with a vision to ignite positive change in Aotearoa. I provide
independent, professional facilitation and leadership coaching through a tikanga Māori lens. Through coaching, I grow leaders to embrace their strengths, discover their Rangatira space, and lead visionary change that inspires. My facilitation philosophy is based upon using indigenous frameworks and collab

orative techniques to bring together diverse perspectives to form a common purpose. Building a safe, respectful and trusted environment underpins the foundation of my facilitation, training and coaching practices. In addition, I am an accredited workplace and business coach with 10 years experience in the
banking sector. Currently, I am training to become an accredited facilitator through the Institute of Cultural Affairs (Australia). Recently, I managed leadership capability and strategic planning programmes for school principals across Aotearoa and am now an independent wahine māori consultant seeking opportunities that support growth, unity and transformational change for Te Ao Māori and the people of Aotearoa.

Before a wānanga, I ask myself, what are my measures of success? 💡

It comes down to a number of things - the engagement of my participants, how effective our final outcome is and if my participants can see the vision and visualise putting their plan into action.

I also look for comments such as…

💭 “When I came to this wānanga, I felt like we were on a double hulled waka, tangata whenua on one side, tangata tiriti on the other - now I feel like we are all on board the same waka paddling in unison.”

💭 “We were blessed to have you as our facilitator. Your approach, calmness and genuine passion as a wahine Māori set the tone for a beautiful day.”

💭 “Your facilitation was fun, interactive while still helping us to fulfill our objectives for that waananga. I was really impressed with how efficiently our time was spent and how much we were able to achieve! You are great at guiding a roopu and holding the mauri.”

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some awesome clients over the years who have trusted me and my facilitation skills to help get their rōpu to where they need to be. But don’t take my word for it, take theirs!

My heart breaks hearing what some Public Sector kaimahi/staff go through in our communities 💔

These are situations I wouldn’t even put myself in - and I’m a facilitator!

To make things harder, these leaders are often part of the same communities they serve, adding to the mental toll. One person said their public sector role feels like a target for community frustration 😔 I honestly don’t know how they do it!

But thankfully as a facilitator I’m seeing some positive shifts:

🤲🏾 More organisations are investing in facilitation skills for their teams
🙋🏾‍♀️ Some are bringing in skilled facilitators to guide a robust process
🤝🏾 Others are teaming up with organisations striving for the same purpose

Lately, this has been the majority of my mahi, especially the co-designing strategy space. It’s so encouraging to see more organisations recognising the power of facilitation to bring communities together 🙏🏾

Equipping your team with facilitation skills or engaging a skilled facilitator early on can save you time, reduce stress and preserve relationships, while also protecting the mental health of your kaimahi/staff!

If you’re stuck or dealing with any of the issues mentioned, I can help with all of the above 😊

Over the next few months, I’m facilitating initiatives that span across the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors...

From my usual marae strategy wānanga to inanga spawning and catchment plans, to organisations fostering repair cultures, food rescue, and addressing the homelessness crisis in Aotearoa, I’m so blessed to be working across a wide range of kaupapa 🙏🏾

However, if I was to pinpoint 🎯 one thing my clients have in common....

It’s their strong desire to build meaningful relationships ➡️

👉🏾 within their teams
👉🏾 with the communities they serve
👉🏾 with te iwi Māori

How do I help? 🤔

👌🏾 I help clients make sense of their ideas by crafting clear roadmaps for the future
👌🏾I can stand confidently in both Māori and non-Māori worlds, navigating effectively to interweave perspectives

It’s that simple!

Through engaging with me, organisations have begun the journey towards:

🟩 Building strong relationships by providing a mana-enhancing space for everyone to share their voice
🟩 Saving time because they now have a clear roadmap to achieve their goals together
🟩 Gaining street cred! Because nothing beats a cohesive team & community working in unison

Ready to dive in the deep end? Like when I plunged into the Amazon after spotting piranhas and alligators? 😄 I’m here to help you navigate the challenges ahead with confidence!

One common issue I often hear after a ‘Rautaki Wānanga’ is either people missing out or the rōpū forgetting to inform others.

When it comes to planning a Rautaki Wānanga, being strategic about the strategy is key. One crucial step is ensuring that the right people are involved from the outset because the more voices you have in the planning stage, the more engagement you’ll have in the implementation.

There are many ‘stakeholder analysis’ templates online to help guide you through this process, however, there are some key stakeholders to consider in the meantime…

⭐ Representatives from the people that your Rautaki aims to serve
⭐ Board/committee members & leaders
⭐ Those who can influence your Rautaki
⭐ Those with vested interests in your Rautaki

Then there’s my favourite - ‘the devil’s advocates’ because when you get them on your side… watch out! 😉

Another tip is to aim for diversity, from our kaumatua to our rangatahi!

Navigating the waves before planning a Rautaki Wānanga is essential. But don’t worry e te whānau, I got you ✊ My job is to help you anticipate the waves so that we can ride them more smoothly 🌊

Because I’m super big on doing it once and doing it right!

Recently, I was asked whether the demand for my services is drying up due to the Political Climate 🤔

After my initial ‘wtf’ reaction, I can understand why some would think that way...

I mean, for nearly 200 years there has been an intentional effort to diminish Māori identity and mana, reinforcing feelings of being less than....and that mindset still lives today!

But thanks to our Tipuna who fought the hard yards, we have been experiencing a powerful resurgence of te ao Māori 🙏

This resurgence is driving the need for te reo Māori, mātauranga Māori, and tikanga Māori services.

What’s more, is that census data shows that Māori are growing, making up around 17% of New Zealand’s total population 🙌🏽

Because of this, the political climate is causing a HUGE demand for our (Māori) services...

👉 businesses (both public and private) need to engage effectively with mana whenua

👉 organisations understand the value and huge potential of indigenous knowledge systems

👉 workplaces are striving to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

👉 te iwi Māori are needing to mobilise under a collective kotahitanga strategy

And the only people who can effectively support this mahi are Māori ❤️🖤🤍

We are a niche e te whānau!! We bring not only business expertise but deep cultural knowledge.

So, long story short, my business is far from dying - it’s thriving! In fact,

🙏The last week of December dates are being negotiated as we speak

🙏 I’m down to two more spots available for potential workshops this side of the year

🙏 We are super close to finalising the details for our Māori ToP Facilitator cohort next year!

I’m doing this cause I know for sure that we are in hot demand, and when one Māori thrives, we want to open spaces so more Māori can thrive 🥰

Nō reira, Māori Mā – you are worth every investment dollar! Do not let anyone tell you otherwise‼️

My DMs are always open for a kōrero if you’re experiencing something similar! Otherwise drop your whakaaro in the comments below 👇🏽

As a facilitator, I’m beginning to notice the impact this political climate is having on people, particularly Māori (including myself!) 😫

So much so that I’m seeing these mamae (hurt) pop up in my wānanga, and as a facilitator, it’s my job to ensure my attendees are in a safe, comfortable space to share 🌱

So how do I manage this as a facilitator?

👉 I acknowledge the mamae when it surfaces

👉 Then, we work together, with permission from the group, to find a way through

These situations can be extremely hard to manage, and can make others in the group feel extremely uncomfortable. Which is why whakawhanaungatanga and establishing solid Tikanga at the start of the workshop is crucial (and having a skilled Māori facilitator of course 😉)

What also helps, is to set clear boundaries as facilitators, understand your trigger points and unconscious bias 🙏

For me, my lane is very clear, in that I’m here to work with Māori and those who are at the point of advancing Māori 🙌🏽

Thankfully my marketing makes this very clear, so on the odd occasion when I’m approached for a different kaupapa that sits outside of my scope I have a wealth of facilitator buddies to refer to 😊

Lastly, for all my facilitator friends out there, ensure that you take time to look after yourself as a facilitator! 💫

We hold some heavy spaces, put ourselves in the middle of the firing line, and often carry these mamae home with us.

Here’s a few tips to help manage this 👇🏽

🍃 Karakia
🍃Hā ki waho
🍃Cleanse your spaces
🍃Cloak yourself with a korowai of people who have your back 🥰

Plus, I’m always here for a kōrero if you need! ❤️

Have you ever shown up to a workshop/wānanga and decided to change your entire runsheet on the day? 😱

I did for the first time last week - and it paid off big time! Check it out 👇🏾

The night before delivering a strategy workshop in Kirikiriroa Hamilton, I had this strong feeling in my puku that the activities I’d planned were good, but just not quite right! 🤔

I think these feelings were amplified by the dramatic lightning and thunderstorm show that Kirikirioa put on. Later, I found out it was ngā Kāhui Ariki preparing for the entrance for our Māori King! ⛈️

I battled with the idea of changing everything, especially since all the resources were prepared and the participants knew what to expect, but that feeling wouldn’t go away! 💭

So I took a step back and thought, “What if?” 🤷🏽‍♀️

What if I changed the agenda? What would that look like? This led me to revisit the team’s ultimate goal and brainstorm alternative workshop ideas that felt like a better fit...

The next day, during whakawhanaungatanga, I told the group about my strong feelings to change the runsheet and asked if they were okay with me following my puku (gut)

They were all in and responded, “Hell yeah, that’s what we’re about!”

With permission from the group I trusted my intuition and pivoted on the spot. The group ended up creating a beautiful tohu, vision, mission statement, and four guiding pou/principles from scratch 🙏🏾

When they asked about the plan after lunch, I laughed and said, “I haven’t figured that out yet, but I’ll tune into the wairua again over lunch and see what comes up.”

💡 Another light bulb moment hit, and I guided them to turn that high-level strategy into an operational plan. By the end, we’d crafted a complete three-year strategic plan in just 5 hours!

Tuning into wairua and mauri is a goal I’ve been working towards through my Pakiwaitara Māori leadership programme with and it truly came to life in this session. It was such a beautiful experience! ✨

I wouldn’t do this all the time, but it’s reassuring to know I can fully trust my intuition when needed in the future! 💫

I fricken love my job!!!

Facilitating Strategy Wānanga gives me so much energy 🥰

Especially during this auspicious occasion where I supported a collective of organisations to come together to create a shared vision towards enhancing support for Rangatahi in the mighty Waikato rohe!

E te Kīngi o te Kotahitanga, on this day, we (Tangata Tiriti & Tangata Whenua) created a shared vision & rautaki underpinned by Te Tiriti o Waitangi 🖤❤️🤍

The seeds you planted are growing and positive shifts are happening that’s for sure! 🙏

And I guess it didn’t help when they had their Independent Facilitator going YES, YES, YES along the way 😅😆

Also, how good does this board look?! I love using colour and different shapes in my sessions! Let me know in the comments if you’d like me to share more about them 👇🏽

04/09/2024

If you’re facilitating in Māori spaces or with Māori participants and feel a bit nervous about making mistakes, don’t worry e te whānau! Even I still get things wrong! Here are some pointers that might help 👇🏽

1️⃣ Understand these key concepts:

👉🏾 Pōhiri / Pōwhiri: A formal process for welcoming a group onto a marae

👉🏾 Mihi Whakatau: An informal version of pōhiri; it mirrors aspects of pōhiri both on and off the marae.

👉🏾 Mihimihi: A brief introduction in te reo Māori, followed by the main proceedings.

2️⃣ Do your research Get in touch with the right people before the hui or workshop to understand the protocols and prepare your group. The process can vary depending on the iwi, hapū, or organisation 🌟

3️⃣ Prepare your audience Pōhiri and pepeha anxiety is real! To ease this, ask if they have any questions or specific details they need to be aware of 💡

4️⃣ Know your audience Before the event, find out if anyone is familiar with key roles such as Kaikaranga, Kaikōrero, or leading waiata. If not, inform the organisers so they can make arrangements 🧍

5️⃣ Koha Discuss the koha before the event. Even if the venue is paid for, a koha is an important gesture of appreciation. Ensure this is planned for in advance 🤲

6️⃣ Kai Typically, Tikanga includes having a kapu tī and kai after official proceedings ☕🍪

7️⃣ Be prepared to go off script 😂 Organisers might deviate from the plan, but it’s all part of the process. Be flexible and ready to adjust your runsheet 😆

If in doubt, reach out to participants, organisers, or friends. As facilitators, our role is to ask the right questions to ensure success. Let’s build each other up and create the best outcomes for everyone! 🖤 ❤️
