Last week we had another great Garden to Table session, with a focus on composting! This year we have two new compost bins, as well as the lovely new worm farm, and in this session we were able to make a second worm farm out of the old Hungry Bin! As a kura we have been learning what waste goes where, as well as how important the ratios of brown matter to green matter are when layering compost. The tamariki really got into it and did a lot of great work establishing our new composting system. Well done tamariki!

Kia ora koutou!

We love that our community is dropping off donations to our Pātaka Kai - our food pantry, but we need your donations to be kai only. Please do not leave books and clothing here as it is incredibly difficult for our small team to move these items on to the right places.

We have even more families in need for kai now that winter is here, so if you're able to spare some pantry items they are always gratefully received. Canned proteins (tuna, chicken), peanut butter, long-life (UHT) milk, rice, pasta, and canned or fresh fruits and vegetables are appreciated. Check out the very healthy looking mint plants ready for their new home!

A couple of weeks ago we had a visit from one of Broad Bay School's former principals, John Goulstone (John was principal here in the 2000s). John stopped by to do some work with Rebecca, and enjoyed looking around our lovely kura. It was great to reconnect, and we hope he'll be back for the school's 150th anniversary in September 2027! Stay tuned for more details on that...

Kia ora Broad Bay whānau, and happy Friday!

We've had another fun and busy week at Broad Bay School, with a sunny run along the harbourside both Fridays (see our 1st, 2nd and 3rd place runners from last week below!), a successful Garden to Table session on Tuesday where half the kura planted lupin (for soil health and for the bees!), and the other half moved the worm farm worms to their new home (and we all learnt about which foods the worms do and don't like, and how to look after them). We also harvested some of our potatoes which have been prepped ready for Matariki soups later in the term.

We also had a trip to Portobello School on Wednesday to see Bob Bickerton (a real treat - and a big thanks to Portobello for the invite!), as well as a visit from the Kindergarten for a Teddy Bears' Picnic here in our lovely new library.

What a week!

More photos to follow...and a number coming to you in this week's newsletter!
