Merry Christmas everyone! We're away for a week but we'll be back before the New Year to check on our hives in preparation for Otago's big honey season - fingers crossed for some good weather! The last of our 2023 honey will be making its way to friends and family and we now have room for the new seasons harvest 🍯🐝

Have you ever seen a swarm?

A hive can swarm if the Queen decides there's not enough space or resources. She will leave the hive, taking some of the bees with her and fly a short distance to find a protected spot to set up her new home.

Swarms can be caught and used to set up a new hive (or sometimes re-joined to their old hive, but the circumstances which caused them to swarm need to be addressed).

If you spot a swarm, send us a message and if we're close by we may be able to catch it.

It's hive painting time! 🎨

Our new rental hives are being painted and prepared for their new homes. We make our best effort to give new hive renters their choice of colour (choosing from white, grey, orange, lemon and lime). These ones will be delivered with just one box for the bees to live in, and we will add more boxes for storing and harvesting honey as the season progresses. 🍯
