A technical outage within core network infrastructure upstream took place early this morning causing service disruption for Earthlight customers and some other independent ISPs in the South Island.

We ask for your patience while technicians work to fix the problem.

In the meantime, we recommend connecting devices via mobile hotspot. For those customers with mobile connections through Earthlight there will be no additional usage charges applied to your mobile data plan, as per our no data cap policy.

Seems internet disruptions elsewhere in the world can get a little extreme. Our technicians haven't had to deal with gunshot damage to cables here in Otago thankfully. Oakland, California on the other hand...

Some of our connections are busy.
Some chew through over 1,000 Gigabytes of data in a month.

That's a Terabyte.

For some, it can be multiple Terabytes in a month.

Our UFB Fibre plans are unlimited data. People like them.
It means they are free to do their things online without worrying about going 'over'.

No way to tell from the riverbank which ISPs felt the most pain from this.

One from the archives for some light reading while we wait for the rain to stop and summer make to make a comeback:

Earthlight featured in Chorus publication, The Download, in November 2019.
We were pretty chuffed at the time, as it was the first article they'd done on a South Island ISP.

It’s likely Earthlight Communications was New Zealand’s first Internet Service Provider (ISP).
