Here's our wrap on the 2026

We sent Richard off to do his judging duty, palate calibrated over four rounds of very serious in-house competition, and he did us proud on the panel.

Then there was our giveaway. We'd promised a Kaffelogic Nano 7 to one lucky attendee, and rather than pull names from a hat like civilised people, raffle tickets were loaded into a second Nano 7 to dispense the winner! 🎟️

Huge congratulations to the 2026 Aotearoa AeroPress top three: third place Hitoshi (), runner-up Ants ( ), and your champion, Han (). Han, next stop is Mexico City for the World AeroPress Championship this December. We'll be watching from Dunedin, cheering loudly and quietly taking notes.

Thanks to for putting on a cracker of an event, and to everyone who stopped by our table. From a staff comp in our office kitchen to the national final, what a ride.

You've already started brewing your coffee at home to save a bit of money. Here's how to make every cup cheaper still.

Coffee prices keep climbing, so we ran the numbers. We priced green (unroasted) coffee from an NZ supplier, found the same or comparable single-origin bean sold roasted by NZ roasters, and compared like-for-like, making sure to calculate the ~15-18% of weight a bean loses during roasting, so it's a fair per-cup figure.

The result: roasting your own saved roughly 30-70¢ on every cup, that's $14-$34 per kg, depending on the bean.

☕ Brazil Cerrado (natural) - about 29% cheaper
☕ Colombia Tolima Planadas (washed) - about 51% cheaper

Same coffee, a fraction of the price. That's the whole idea behind roasting at home!

For the curious: prices gathered 25th August 2026, compared per kilo of roasted coffee (we used roasters' best per-kg pricing, not small-bag rates). We've averaged across several NZ roasters rather than singling anyone out, this isn't a knock on roasters. It's just the case for keeping a roaster on your bench too!

Ever seen a "Nano 7e" and wondered if you're missing an upgrade? 🤔

Is it the enhanced model? Extreme? Elite? Limited edition? Does the e unlock extra heating power?

Mystery solved: the e stood for Europe. Early European units shipped with a slightly different heating element to perform at their best on 220V supplies.

These days, every 220–240V Nano 7 uses the same element. So there's no "e" anymore. Just the Nano 7, wherever you are. 🌍

The finals. Well, mostly.

Round 2 winner Nick was in London, his stand-in Karl was on leave, and Round 3 winner Daniel was away too. Which left one finalist standing: Steve. To his credit, he didn't just claim it by default, he brewed three AeroPresses and earned it properly in front of the judges.

On the panel for the decider: Richard, Deren, and Milo.

Same standards, sharper stakes. Steve pressed, the judges tasted, and our 2026 Staff AeroPress Champion is Steve, who goes home with a Kaffelogic AirScape (more on these soon) to keep his beans as fresh as his technique.

That wraps our first in-house AeroPress series. Three rounds, one final, and a Product Development Manager whose palate is now thoroughly calibrated. And the coffee behind all of it? Our first dedicated AeroPress roast profile is now live at kl-profiles.com, so you can load it onto your Nano and brew what we've been drinking all series.

The real test is this Friday, when Richard judges at the in Wellington. Best of luck to every competitor stepping up to the table, and good luck to the crowd too, we'll be giving away a Nano 7 to one lucky attendee! 🏆

Meet chaff, the only "waste" your Nano 7 produces.

It's the papery skin that lifts off the bean during roasting, and it all collects right here in the chaff collector. Emptying this bowl is literally your entire cleanup routine.

But don't bin it! Chaff is brilliant in the compost, as garden mulch, or scratched straight into the soil. It breaks down very fast and the worms love it.

Roast coffee > feed the garden!

What do you do with yours?

Round 3, and the road to the staff final ends here.

This week's contenders: Karl, Daniel, and Deren.
On the panel: Richard, Steve, and Emma, tasting with the focus of people who've started to take this far too seriously.

Same beans for everyone, Brazilian Beneficio Pedra Branca, roasted on our AeroPress profile at Level 1.9.

This one went to the wire. All three judges landed on a different coffee, so it came down to a countback, and Daniel edged the win with two judges ranking his brew second. Not a knockout, but a win built on practised consistency.

That locks in the final field: Steve, Daniel, and Karl, stepping in for Nick, who's currently over in London. Nick's handed his recipe across, so the plan's in safe hands.

Finals next week. Three rounds of calibration down, and Richard tells us he's feeling quietly confident about his palate. Handy timing, with the real on the 14th.

Recipe in the comments if you fancy brewing like Daniel.

One bag of green coffee. Three completely different cups.

These are all the same bean, a Brazil natural from Beneficio Pedra Branca (via Opal Coffee - Specialty) roasted on the Nano 7 using the Kaffelogic Classic profile. The only variable was the roast level:

Level 0.1: roast ended at 5:59 / 206.6°C. Light, bright and delicate, beautiful as a pour-over.
Level 2.2: roast ended at 9:04 / 220.0°C. Balanced, sweet, crowd-pleasing, great in the AeroPress.
Level 5.9: roast ended at 12:07 / 240.2°C. Deep, rich and developed, built for espresso and flat whites.

That's the point of roasting at home, you're not locked into one roaster's idea of what this bean should taste like.
One bag becomes a light roast for the weekend V60, a medium for the daily brew, and a dark for when you want something bold, your choice, your style.

Which one would you reach for first?

Round 2, and the AeroPress heat is rising.

This week's contenders: Emma, Nick, and Chris Hilder. On the panel: Richard, Deren, and Daniel, doing the hard yards of drinking coffee and looking thoughtful.

Same beans for everyone. Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, roasted on our AeroPress profile at Level 1.8, so once again it came down to technique. Those techniques were, let's say, varied... Emma pressed with heart-shaped hands. Chris brought his elbow into it to really turn up the pressure. Nick quietly followed a meticulous written plan, like a professional.

Turns out the plan works. The round winner is Nick!

There's a twist though: Nick can't make the finals, so he'll be nominating a stand-in and handing over his winning recipe. Choose wisely, Nick.

Round 3 is coming. Recipe in the comments if you fancy borrowing a champion's method. We hope the contenders are taking notes!

What better way to spend a Wednesday than a little friendly competition?

This August we're sending our Product Development Manager, Richard Borrett, to judge at the . Before he goes, his palate needs calibrating, so we ran the first round of the Kaffelogic Staff AeroPress Comp to sharpen him up.

In the ring: contenders Henry, Steve, and Richard himself, who we made blind-judge his own brew.

On today's panel: Daniel and Chris, dragged away from their software, with Richard pulling double duty.

Everyone brewed the same coffee, Bali Kintamani Extended Natural which was roasted on Sean's new AeroPress profile at Level 2.4. Yes, a dedicated AeroPress roast profile, and yes, it's coming soon. So it came down to pure technique.

The round winner? Steve. Clean, precise, and clearly the recipe to beat.

Steve, we'll see you at the finals. Everyone else, see you in Round 2 next week.

Full winning recipe in the comments if you want to steal it.
