The workplace can be a minefield sometimes- especially when dealing with dissension on a daily basis. Here’s a helpful anagram you can use to reduce business conflict:
-S- Specific: identifying the root cause of conflict can help you resolve it. This means you need to ask yourself: where did it start, why is this important, who’s involved, and which resources are available.
-M- Measured: your response should be measured, so you can stay on track, remain neutral and not get emotionally involved. Your action, or inaction will help either fuel or extinguish the potential fire.
-A- Attainable: The prevention and therefore the resolution to conflict should be attainable. Don’t make promises you can’t, or won’t keep. Ask yourself “How can I solve this conflict in a fair and reasonable manner that meets the needs of all parties?”, and “How realistic is settling this dispute within the resources we have?”
-R- Relevant: Ensure the argument between parties is relevant to the workplace. Anything that happens outside of the office should remain outside. If the dispute creates a situation that prevents employees from performing their duties to the best of their ability,or is affecting other members of staff, you will need to handle this responsibly. Ask yourself if it is relevant, the right place, am I the right person to achieve this, and does it require further action?
-T- Timely: Act in a timely manner to minimise any further conflict. Speak with both parties immediately, take action within a reasonable amount of time, and see the resolution through until completely resolved. If left unmanaged, further issues can develop.
Whenever you feel conflict, tension or can predict a disagreement occurring, remember to think S.M.A.R.T.
