A beautiful few days sharing Coal Pit in Japan.

Kate and Anika have loved connecting with our friends, trade partners, and wine community in Tokyo - pouring our wines and sharing the stories behind Coal Pit.

A special thank you to our wonderful hosts for such a memorable selection of winemaker’s dinners and trade shows. To Kicca for their continued support, to Makoto from Wakanui Tokyo, and to our thoughtful interpreter, Bungo Matsunaga, helping bring the Coal Pit story to life.

Next stop: Japan & South Korea

Anika & Kate are heading offshore today to share a little piece of Gibbston with our friends across Japan and South Korea.

First up, a packed week in Tokyo alongside our wonderful partners , , and :

Sat 6 June - Winemaker's dinner at Wakanui Grill Dining Tokyo
Mon 8 June - NZ Wine Fair, Ritz-Carlton Tokyo
Tues 9 June - Winemaker's at Roba Tangyo, Tokyo
Wed 10 June - Winemaker's at Barry's, Tokyo

From there, it's on to Seoul for a series of tastings with our brilliant supporters in South Korea.

There's something pretty special about seeing Coal Pit wines poured on the other side of the world, Central Otago Pinot Noir, beautiful produce, and hospitality to match.

Nine vintages in.

This marks Anika's 9th vintage with Coal Pit, and her love for this site only deepens with every season. As she puts it, each wine is "365 days of weather in a bottle" - every frost, every rainfall, every long Gibbston summer day held in the glass.

Our high-altitude valley swings hard, season to season and sometimes week to week, demanding instinct, patience, and a deep respect for the land. Nine vintages on, and she knows this vineyard like no one else.

With Anika at the helm, exceptional wines aren't a happy accident; they're the quiet, careful result of someone who knows this land by heart. Here's to Anika, to nine vintages, and to the wines only she could make.

A long weekend made for slowing down. For gathering around the table, opening something special, and enjoying the simple pleasure of good food, good wine, and good company.

Our team will also be taking a well-deserved pause this King’s Birthday weekend after a busy few weeks in the winery and cellar. A little time to rest, reset, and enjoy the season.

From our table to yours, we hope your long weekend is a lovely one.

Vintage 2026, done.

A huge thank you to our winemaker Anika, who somehow keeps every moving part of the vintage steady while still making it all look calm. Every pick, every decision, every late night in the winery - it all matters, and this season was no different.

And to our interns Emma & Tatiana, thank you for throwing yourselves into the chaos with us. Long days, cold mornings, stained hands, wet boots and plenty of laughs in between. We couldn’t have done it without you both.

Vintage 2026 is in its final stretch!

The last of the fruit is through the press, and now comes the unglamorous part: climbing into the tanks and digging out the spent skins by hand. It's hot, heavy, sticky work. But it's also when you get the clearest read on the season: the structure of the skins, how the cap held together, what the ferment gave us.

Every shovelful is a small clue about what these wines will become. A few more weeks, and the winery gets quiet again.

Cap management might be the most repetitive job in the winery, and also one of the most important. For Pinot Noir, how you handle the cap determines the kind of extraction you get, and with a variety this sensitive, force is never the answer.

Pour overs keep things moving gently. Anika's foot stomping takes that further. It's deliberate, it's precise, and it's very much her style, close to the fruit, working with it rather than against it.

Once the fruit is off the vine and into the winery, the work kicks up a notch. Anika tastes the stems first, that's what drives the whole bunch versus destem decision, and it's not a formula, it's a read on the season.

This year, with the cooler conditions we had, the stems were retaining more bitterness, so we're running predominantly destemmed fruit.
That's where the destemming machine earns its place. It's not just about efficiency, it's about precision. Keeping the berries intact through that process matters. Damaged fruit at this stage becomes a problem you can't fix later, so every pass through is watched closely.

And nothing leaves the winery wasted. The stems come out the other side and go straight onto the compost, making their way back into the vineyard across the year. The same fruit that came off the vines ends up feeding them again. That's the kind of full circle we like.
