Researching Wāhine Māori in the Justice System - From My Lens

As a wāhine Māori who has lived through the justice system and now works alongside others on similar journeys, this mahi is personal. I do not research from the outside looking in — I research from within, guided by lived experience, tikanga, and a deep responsibility to our wāhine.

Through kaupapa Māori and mana wāhine, I centre our voices, our mana, and our right to define justice for ourselves. I use pūrākau, hui wānanga, and kōrero ā-whānau because our stories matter, and the way we tell them matters too.

This isn’t just about gathering data. It’s about healing, restoring dignity, and making real change in systems that have long failed us. Our voices deserve to be heard — not as statistics but as leaders, mothers, warriors, and experts in our own lives. 🖤

We do what we do because working with wāhine Māori in the justice space is crucial for several reasons.

Firstly, it acknowledges the challenges and experiences that wāhine Māori face within the justice system, which differs from those of non-Māori women. By amplifying their voices and perspectives, interventions are more culturally sensitive and suited.

Secondly, supporting wāhine Māori in the justice space helps address systemic biases and disparities. Their input informs a collaborative partnership to promote equity and fairness within the system, ensuring they are served with the dignity they deserve.

Moreover, collaborating with wāhine Māori fosters empowerment, absolute sovereignty, self-determination, and whanaungatanga within our community. This allows wāhine Māori to take active roles in shaping solutions to issues they face, rather than being passive recipients of interventions imposed from Western, colonised systems that are detrimental to them.

Overall, working with wāhine Māori in the justice space not only addresses their specific needs and concerns but also advances justice and equality for them, and their whānau with impact.
