We are incredibly grateful for this amazing shout-out from Gisborne MTB Club

Next shout out goes to Andrew and the team at Civil Assist. These guys helped us guide this project through consenting. Without their expertise and generosity this project would not have happened. Massive thanks Civil Assist - Local legends helping their community!!

That old building might be hiding a problem you can't see.

Plenty of commercial and rural buildings across Tairāwhiti were built long before today's seismic standards — and after a few big shakes and a cyclone, the way they carry load isn't always what it once was.

A structural assessment tells you where a building really stands: how it'd perform in an earthquake, what's actually holding it up, and what (if anything) needs strengthening. No guesswork — just a clear picture before you renovate, buy, or sign a lease.

Wondering about a building you own or manage? Talk to us — we do this work right here in the region.

🌱 Back on the whenua at Tapuwae Whitiwhiti.
Every winter for six years now, our team has made the trip up the coast to plant natives alongside Whāngārā Farms — and it's become one of the days we look forward to most. This year we got around 750 more seedlings into a coastal block retired from farming.
Walking past the trees we planted back in 2020 — healthy canopies, birds returning — is the best reminder of why we keep coming back. Small trees, long game.
Ngā mihi nui to Whāngārā Farms for having us on the whenua again, and for the vision behind this kaupapa. When people come together for the whenua, you grow more than trees.
Engineering for life. 🌊

The most important part of any build is the part you'll never see again.

Foundations do the quiet work — carrying everything above them down into ground that varies hugely from one site to the next. Good foundation design starts with understanding what that ground can actually take: how it settles, how it holds up under load, and how it behaves in an earthquake or after heavy rain.

Get the foundation right and the rest of the structure has a solid start. Get it wrong and it's the most expensive thing on site to fix.

Planning a build across the region? Talk to us early about what's under it.

When was the last time your building had a seismic check-up?

Older structures across Tairāwhiti carry decades of history — but shifting ground and evolving codes mean resilience isn't a "set and forget" thing. Our structural team assesses buildings against current seismic standards, spotting risk before it becomes a problem.

If you're not sure where your building stands, that's exactly the question to ask us.

Starting a project? Five questions worth asking before you begin:

1. Do we actually know what's in the ground here?
2. What are the site's natural hazards — flooding, slips, seismic?
3. Have we scoped the right disciplines from the start?
4. What consents and monitoring will this trigger?
5. Who's coordinating it all so nothing falls through the cracks?

Getting these answered early saves time, money and headaches later. It's the boring-sounding stuff that keeps projects on track.

Happy to help you work through them.

🌊 Did you know?

New Zealand has experienced some of its most severe flooding events in recent years — including Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, which caused widespread damage to roads, bridges, and drainage systems across the North Island.

Building flood resilience into infrastructure from the design stage is critical. This includes:

✅ Proper stormwater and drainage design
✅ Scour protection for bridges and waterways
✅ Culvert sizing for extreme rainfall events
✅ Geotechnical assessment of slip-prone areas

Civil Assist has been involved in post-flood recovery and resilience work across the region. 💪

Last month our team was out at the Awatere Bridge on the East Cape, carrying out pre-construction environmental monitoring ahead of some exciting resilience improvement works.
Tairāwhiti never fails to impress — rugged, remote, and absolutely stunning. But beyond the views, this kind of groundwork is what ensures we're protecting the river and the surrounding environment before a single piece of construction equipment arrives on site.
These photos say it better than we can. 📸
If you've got a project coming up near a waterway or sensitive environment, get in touch early — it makes all the difference.
