Here at the hub! DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE:

This will be out last Defensive Driving course of the year. Once we know we update everyone.

The Graduated Driver Licensing System for Class 1 (Car Licences) is changing on 25th January 2027. Part of the changes mean that you will no longer be able to reduce the time on your Restricted licence by doing an Approved Course, such as the Street Talk course we offer.

What this means for Restricted Licence Holders:

1. If you are under 25 years of age and obtained your Class 1 Restricted Licence after 25th January 2026 you will only need to wait 12 months, before being able to apply for your Full licence without doing a test. No course is necessary. If you are 25 years of age or over the relevant date will be 25th July 2026

2. If you are under 25 years of age and got your restricted licence between 25th July 2025 and 25th January 2026 you can still do the full licence test after 12 months by completing a Street Talk Course. This will apply up to 25thJanuary 2027, then you will be on the new rules. If you are 25 years of age or over the relevant dates will be between 25th June 2026 and 25th October 2026.

Note: any Infringement notices you get after 7th May 2026 that have demerit points will extend that period by 6 months. Demerit points incurred before 7th May 2026 will not result in a time extension.

Essentially, if you are not going to be able to get your full licence before 25th January 2027, there will be no time benefit to completing a Street Talk Course.

If you can reduce your time before 25th January 2027 either from 18 months to 12 months (Under 25) or 6 months to 3 months (25 and over), then we recommend still doing the course.

People on their learner licences would benefit waiting until after January 25th as we'll likely be provided a different course for reducing time off your learns. At this time doing a defensive driving course on your learners will not give you any reduction in wait time between licences.

🚭 FREE Youth Va**ng Education Train-the-Trainer Workshop – Greymouth 🚭

Are you passionate about supporting rangatahi and helping your community make informed decisions about va**ng?

Thanks to funding from West Coast Community Trust and Otago Community Trust, a fully funded Youth Va**ng Education Train-the-Trainer Workshop is being held at Byte Māwhera Digital Hub this August.

This practical, interactive workshop will equip participants with:
✅ Up-to-date va**ng education knowledge
✅ Practical tools and resources
✅ Confidence to facilitate conversations and workshops
✅ Access to an ongoing support network
✅ Pathways towards an ARFNZ facilitation certificate

Ideal for:
• Teachers and school staff
• Youth workers and community practitioners
• Hapū, iwi and Māori health providers
• Health and wellbeing services
• Community leaders and advocates
• Young people ready to educate their peers and communities

As a Train-the-Trainer programme, participants will be expected to share their learning with their organisation, community or networks following the workshop.

🎯 Only 20 places available – an Expressions of Interest process will be used.

• Acceptance confirmations due: 24 July 2026

This Friday 24th April, at Byte - Māwhera Digital Hub - TWO TALKS celebrating our beautiful outdoors!

*The amazing kea, how to take part in the kea counting survey, and how to keep your tramping and camping trip "kea safe".

*Tales from the Sea - Emma Newton will tell us all about her recent 10-day experience on the Spirit of New Zealand!

THAT Outdoors Group is a Tū Manawa funded, youth-led group for young people wanting to get outdoors, learn new skills, and make new friends. These two talks are for everyone interested in hearing about the topics. It's also a good chance to learn more about upcoming walks and workshops.

At Byte Māwhera Digital Hub, we know that people learn, think, and concentrate in different ways.

For some people, including those who are neurodiverse, kinesthetic learners, or simply have a busy brain, having something small to move or hold can help with focus, listening, and processing information during meetings, training sessions, or coaching conversations.

That’s why we’ve introduced our Busy Brain Station.

You’ll find a bowl of fidget tools available for anyone who might find them helpful during their time at the Hub. Whether you’re attending a training course, workshop, meeting, or coaching session, feel free to use one if it helps you stay focused and engaged.

Just help yourself during your visit and pop it back when you're finished so others can use it too.

Sometimes the best thinking happens when busy brains have busy hands. 💡
