🌋 The Pacific Ring of Fire 🌍

One of the most seismically active regions on Earth — stretching across 25,000 miles — the Ring of Fire is home to over 75% of the world’s volcanoes and experiences 90% of all earthquakes.

From Japan to Chile, from Alaska to New Zealand, this fiery loop marks the boundaries of tectonic plates grinding and colliding beneath our feet.

🔴 Earthquakes up to magnitude 8.7
🟠 Frequent volcanic eruptions
🟡 Constant geological change

📍 This region reminds us of Earth’s raw power — and the importance of science in predicting and preparing for natural disasters.

🛰️We call this type of satellite image, 'Night Microphysics' It uses a combination of things to allow you to see what the clouds are doing at night🌑🌝

🌧️Overnight a large band of moisture bearing cloud has been moving toward the country from the west. This is the band of cloud which appears red on the left side of the image. As it moves over the South Island, it's expected to bring heavy rain to the west coast, with accumulations between 130mm - 160mm forecast tonight🌧️

🟠We have heavy rain watches and warnings in place over parts of the South Island later today and into tomorrow morning. Check the details here bit.ly/AllWarnings

Sand and sandbags will be available from 6:30pm tonight from Glentunnel Community Centre and Sheffield Community Hall. You will need to bring your own shovel.

We're closely monitoring the weather situation this evening.

How you can prepare:

If it’s flooded – forget it! Don’t try to drive or walk through floodwaters.
Stay home if conditions become extremely hazardous.
Check on your neighbours, especially those who may need assistance.
Secure your property and livestock – move animals and equipment to higher ground if needed.
Clear leaves and debris from gutters and drains around your home.

We'll keep you updated here and at selwyn.govt.nz/rainwarning

ℹ️ Port Hills Fire Updateℹ️

As we head into the evening, we have an updated map for you of the road status and fire perimeter. A number of the roads that have been closed have restricted access for residents only. Civil Defence Emergency Management Canterbury Group Controller, James Thompson reiterated today “although we can visibly see the improvement in the Port Hills Fire, it is important we don’t become complacent. This fire is still requiring a coordinated effort across multiple agencies and we remain under a State of Emergency.”

Please see Canterbury - Fire and Emergency for the most up to date information on the fire but here are a few key points from them.

🔸Firefighters have been working hard today to strengthen containment lines before the wind starts to develop tomorrow.

🔸Port Hills residents will notice drone activity over the fireground tonight. Our specialist drone team will be using thermal cameras to pinpoint the location of more hotspots. And at first light a helicopter with thermal imaging will fly around the whole 24km perimeter of the fireground.

🔸As we prepare to launch our night drone operation, we remind those who have your own drones not to fly them anywhere near the Port Hills. The airspace over the fireground closed to all aircraft except those involved in the response to the fire. When private drones are reported in the vicinity of a fire, we have to land our helicopters immediately for the safety of the pilots and crew, and everyone on the ground below.
