Meet Pablo Ackermann, farm manager at Pahau Reserve in Culverden, North Canterbury, milking 500 cows.

🧬 "Staphylococcus" is a family name. "aureus" is the first name that matters.

There are 50+ staphylococcus species that can turn up in a milk sample. Most are mild and opportunistic. One of them — Staph. aureus — is contagious, hides deep in the udder, and cures less than half the time with antibiotics.

🔬 Telling Staph. aureus apart from CNS/NAS reliably is genuinely difficult, and given what rides on the answer — culling, segregation, treatment choices — it's not something to guess at. FCDC, Herdscreen and Snapshot were built around exactly that question, with the sensitivity and repeatability the decisions deserve.
