Meet Pablo Ackermann, farm manager at Pahau Reserve in Culverden, North Canterbury, milking 500 cows.

Over two seasons with Farm Medix, Pablo has cut the farm's somatic cell count by 30%, now sitting at around 70,000.

It comes down to two things working together. Targeted testing of every clinical case, and careful shed routines: no overmilking, less manure splash, less water at the backing gate.

β€œFarm Medix is really useful, because it gives you a guide on how to deal with the issues we have.”

More farmers are testing on farm and the results speak for themselves. πŸ„

When Colm O'Kane started using Fresh Cow Dry Cowβ„’ on his 1,140-cow farm in Culverden, he wasn't sure what to expect.

"I was real nervous at the start whenever I came here, because the farm owner said they were doing it and I thought it was going to be a lot of admin."

But after three seasons, his farm now ranks among the lowest for antibiotic use at his vet clinic and Colm has a clear message for anyone still on the fence:

"I think it's well worth it in the long run."

If you're thinking about on-farm mastitis testing, there's no better time to start.

Colm O'Kane milks 1,140 cows in Culverden, North Canterbury. In his third season with Farm Medix, his farm sits around 10th lowest for antibiotic use among all dairy farms supplied by North Canterbury Vet Clinics | NCVC Dairy.

The process is simple: sample any cow presenting with mastitis or reacting to the RMT test, send it to the incubator, and treat based on the result. No guesswork.

"Looking back, it was probably the best decision we've done."

🧬 "Staphylococcus" is a family name. "aureus" is the first name that matters.

There are 50+ staphylococcus species that can turn up in a milk sample. Most are mild and opportunistic. One of them β€” Staph. aureus β€” is contagious, hides deep in the udder, and cures less than half the time with antibiotics.

πŸ“– Lara Juliano's piece in Hoard's Dairyman walks through why it matters: https://hoards.com/article-38012-What-are-the-differences.html

πŸ”¬ Telling Staph. aureus apart from CNS/NAS reliably is genuinely difficult, and given what rides on the answer β€” culling, segregation, treatment choices β€” it's not something to guess at. FCDC, Herdscreen and Snapshot were built around exactly that question, with the sensitivity and repeatability the decisions deserve.

πŸ’¬ Got Staph questions? We're here to help.

Mastitis can be caused by different kinds of bacteria and some of them have a similar name, but they behave differently in the cow’s udder.
