I finished up the cornice repair in Maeroa, there was a lot of other stuff going on there including some medium radius sweeps that needed a bit if work and 1.5-2 x the amount of external corner beads vs an average new build.

I was fortunate on this one to be following where I caught up with one of the guys who used to work for another firm, that my old boss did a lot of work for back around the GFC era.

The owners were amazing and it was a real pleasure to be on this project.

Sustainability and environmental care is about stacking systems where incremental changes compound to optimal outcomes.

Last winter I finally joined the ever growing EV fleet, and over summer I expanded my suite of best in class sanding technology, which has enabled us to arrive and depart very cleanly.

This job from early autum was from a lead on a website that focuses in local economies.

Together with my packout system, which forms rapid change decoupled load logistics, I could easily pivot from the exterior work I had underway to efficiently correct many historical faux pas.

With board over timber frame you're very rarely going to achieve dead flat, and less so where butt joint patching occurs. Employing different sanders for different tasks takes us from heavy corrective surface preparation for flatter surfaces, through to fine finishing all with the maximum possible environmental dust control and massively reduced fatigue, better for me, better for you.

A fireplace I did in December, a real battle dodging blazing summer sun and heavy downpours. 3 coats with fibre and mesh, after a low pressure sugar soap wash and a light scuff with the tungsten rasp.

This was the best assembled fireplace I've done so far, which helped offset the environmental challenges.

I've got a bit of a curly one here, patching cornice over a stairwell, it's quite a fall if you slip. The factory in Hamilton that had the mold for this profile shut down a while back. Luckily I've brought my skyhook and a bit of imagination. The original plan was to use a running mold, but there was a piece salvaged, so that let us change course to a different solution. Lets see how this shapes up.

I finally got around to making a grasello today, and put it on this ceiling. I haven't burnished it, might do another coat. It was pretty nice to use, better than some I have bought. We are at the stage where we are fine tuning the surface design, not to just "look pretty", but to choreograph light play and balance the space to reflect or diffuse in the right places, at the right time of day. This isn't "venetian" plastering. I'm not Italian and neither is the material. This is traditional plastering.

A little alteration I did a while back and forgot to post.

I had to form that chamfer. I dont recall how I did it, probably just eyeballed it.

The other day I met another plasterer in Hamilton who was talking about a fireplace he'd seen recently and it reminded me, here's another job I never got around to posting.

This was on a newbuild in Rangitahi at Raglan.

Microcement fireplace and hearth. Given fhe scope I proposed a method to the builder, who really pushed to do it another way. I told them if they do it that way it needs to be executed in such a way, which was kind of ignored and ultimately failed, so we ended up doing it my way on a shorter timeline.

There's a few things I'd do differently, but not so much that I'd call the piece a disaster. This was from around early mid 2024 when the divvy was closed and I had to go out via Waingaro

I was out for a stroll in Raglan today and bumped into the customer from this job. I thought it was really funny timing since I'd only posted the working pics a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't seen him since we wrapped the job up two winters ago. Being the top bloke he is he's kindly forwarded a couple of images of the pond filled and with the walk bridge over it.

Another old pic set. I spent five years on this house inside and out, originally a referral from one of my very first customers over a decade ago, this family have since sold, and also invited me to come and do bits and bobs at their new place in Matangi.

Over the course of this project again I ran into old associates, and forged some new relationships. Alteration work really is a pleasure, every day I learn something new, and every week I meet different people from all walks of life.

This isn't just a sector of a market that you rush to when new build residental slows down, it's a niche, and a career path that presents you with fresh challenges to keep growing your skillset.
