WINNERS WANT TO PLAY ON WINNING TEAMS.

Think about sport. The best players don't sign with the team that lost every game last season. They go where the culture is sharp, the standards are high, and the wins are stacking up. And if they do end up on a losing team, they're already looking for a way out.

Hiring works exactly the same way.

A players aren't looking for a paycheck. They're looking for a winning team. They want to walk into a shop where things are dialed in, where the work is great, where the standards are held, where the leadership is strong, and where they can see a future for themselves. They want to be part of something they're proud of.

This is where most contractors get the marketing wrong. They try to attract people by showing off the fun. The barbecues. The banter. The team days. And don't get me wrong, that stuff matters. But A players don't want to have a great time while losing. They want to have a great time while winning.

If all you're showing online is the fun, you'll attract people who just want the fun. The ones who want to come to work, take the mickey, and get paid. That's the B and C player audience.

If you want A players, market the performance too. Show the wins. Show the awards. Show the jobs you're proud of. Show the standards you hold. Show the team taking pride in what they do. Show that this is a place where good work gets recognized and bad work doesn't get tolerated.

That's the magnet. Fun plus winning. Take either one away and you stop attracting the people you actually want.

These jobs are costing you margin. Avoid them at all costs!

YOUR JOB AD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AD YOU'LL EVER RUN.

Most contractors treat the job ad like an afterthought. A quick list of tasks. A few lines about what you need from the person. "Must have own tools. Must be reliable. Must be hard working. Inquire within."

That's not an ad. That's a wish list. And it's why you keep getting average applicants.

The job ad is a piece of marketing. It's the single most important ad you'll ever run, because the people it brings in determine 70% of your success. So it needs to be written like marketing. Strong hook at the top. Clear opportunity. Real differentiation. A call to action that tells them exactly what to do next.

And here's the part most contractors get wrong. The ad isn't about you. It's about them.

What's in it for the person reading it? Why would an A player walk away from a job they already have to come work with you? What's the future you're offering? What's the growth? What's the team like? What's the work like? Why is this the place they've been looking for?

If your ad reads like every other ad on Indeed, you're going to get every other applicant on Indeed. The serial job hunters. The ones who are better at interviews than they are at their craft. The best of a bad bunch.

If your ad stands out, you attract people who stand out. It's that simple.

You don't need to be a copywriter. You don't need to be clever. You just need to stop writing job ads like job ads and start writing them like ads that sell.

GREAT PEOPLE AREN'T FOUND. THEY'RE ATTRACTED.

Most contractors think hiring is about going out and finding good people. It isn't.

The good ones are already working somewhere. They're not sitting on Indeed refreshing the page waiting for your ad to drop. They're choosing where they want to be. And right now, most contracting businesses are doing a better job of repelling them than attracting them.

That's the real shift. You stop trying to find people and start building a business that good people can't ignore.

Everything you do counts here. The ad you write. How fast you reply when someone applies. How structured your interviews are. How you talk about your values. How your team shows up online. The jobs you post. The standards you hold. The awards you give out. The way your shop looks when a candidate walks in.

All of it is a signal. And A players read every single signal before they decide whether to say yes.

The contractors who hire well aren't lucky. They're running a full marketing and sales process for talent, all the time, not just when they need a body. By the time they actually run an ad, the brand has already done most of the work.

When you do this right, you stop chasing staff and start choosing them. People apply because they want in. They turn down counter-offers from their current boss because what you've built is more attractive than another dollar an hour.

That's not magic. That's strategy.
