The Rebel Cutter

The Rebel Cutter I cut timber. I cut lies. I cut systems that no longer serve. Green as, been in the game 4 months 👌🏽

Built by earth. Tempered by fire.

Just got the new muffler for the ported 044 build! 🤙

This thing is going to open it up nicely and make it bark the way a proper saw should. Nice and loud, just the way I like it! Can't wait to get it bolted on and hear how she sounds under load.

Who else loves the sound of a well-tuned saw? 🔥🪵🪚

It's great to see family tools of the trade still around.

This is my great grandad's old crosscut saw and falling axe head. The axe head is an absolute beast — photos don't really do the size of it justice.

Pretty special to be able to hold and appreciate the tools that helped put food on the table generations ago. Makes you think about the hard work that went into the job back then compared to the gear we have today.

Anyone else still have old forestry or bush tools passed down through the family?

Something I found out myself today on the 500i.

That little notch in the tab beside the oil cap is actually there to hold the oil cap rope and keep it out of the sawdust when you're filling up.

Probably something a lot of people already knew, but it was news to me! It's the little details like this that you pick up over time when you're running a saw every day.

Always learning something new in the bush. 🌲🪵🪚

Today was a bit of a mix of good and bad.

On the positive side, I had a reasonably productive day with 120 trees down on a steep face, so there was still some solid work achieved.

On the other hand, I've decided to throw in the towel with my current situation. I have valid reasons for making that decision, but I don't feel it's fair to publicly share the details out of respect for the crew I've just left.

What I do know is that forestry is still the industry I want to pursue. I'm keen to get back into it as soon as possible and find another crew that's willing to take me on as an apprentice, help me gain the necessary tickets, and continue developing my skills towards becoming a foreman and eventually running an operation myself.

In the meantime, I've got some time to catch up on things around home, give the saws a proper clean-up, and get a few jobs sorted that have been put on the back burner.

This may be a pause, but it definitely isn't the end. The goal hasn't changed. 💪🌲🪵

Bit of a shoutout to NZFO (New Zealand Forestry Operations LTD).

I was a bit slow bringing it up in the video because I was trying to remember the name without having to write it down, but they sorted the bossman's 500i out with a MaxFlow setup, which was definitely well needed.

The saw is breathing a whole lot better now, and it's always good to see companies backing the forestry industry with products that actually make a difference.

Cheers to the team at NZFO! 👌🪵🪚

One real downside to the 500i, in my opinion, is the air filtration setup. Not so much the filter itself, but all the little crevices and corners around it where the fine dust and chips like to build up.

I find myself having to strip the saw down and clean it out a lot more often compared to some other saws. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but it's definitely one of the things I'd like to see improved.

Anyone else running a 500i noticed the same thing?

This is one of the reasons why it's essential to set your hinge properly.

A knot can be hidden within the hinge wood, affecting the holding wood and changing how the tree reacts during the fall. If that hinge isn't set correctly, there's a chance the tree won't go where you intended it to.

Every tree teaches you something. Hazards like this aren't always obvious until you start cutting, which is why understanding hinge wood and reading the tree is so important.

And this is exactly why I love being out in the bush learning this new skill. Every day brings a new lesson, a new challenge, and another opportunity to improve.

Who loves a good noodle session? 😎

There's just something satisfying about watching those noodles shooting out the back of the cut. Nothing beats burying the bar in a big log and letting it eat!

Bonus is the noodles don't go to waste either — I use them as fire starters and they work brilliantly. 🔥

Anyone else save their noodles, or am I the only one?

The ported 660 had its first taste of a 36-inch bar today and handled it like a champ. Put it to work cutting up some gum and it pulled through the timber with no trouble at all.

Always good putting new gear combinations to the test and seeing what they're capable of. Plenty more work ahead for this setup.

Don't you just love it when you're clearing your path and the next minute there's a rock hiding right underneath the scrub that you couldn't see? 🤣

One second you're making good progress, the next you're introducing your chain to solid rock. Always keeps you on your toes out here. That's bush work for you — you never quite know what's hiding under the overgrowth until you hit it.

Anyone else found a few surprise rocks the hard way? 😂
