Stonecroft is a family owned winery in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. It was one of the first wineries to be established in the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District®. At Stonecroft, we continue to make a small quantity of wine, using traditional methods. Stonecroft is well known for its Syrah, Zinfandel, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay wines. We also make a Hawke's Bay style Sauvignon Blanc and a Merlo

t/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Both the winery and original vineyards are fully certified organic through AsureQuality and have IFOAM accreditation.

Stonecroft’s story began with a vision, a patch of stony land in the Gimblett Gravels, and a lot of hard work.

More than 40 years later, that story continues.

In the final episode of Stonecroft Stories, Dr Alan Limmer reflects on Stonecroft’s journey and what it means to see the label and the brand carried forward by the Fistonich Family.

Designed by Alan and Glennice Limmer around their kitchen table, it features the very w**ery Alan built himself after teaching himself how to construct buildings and spending weekends bringing it to life.

Dr Alan Limmer had never worked in a vineyard. He’d never grown anything in his life. Not even a garden.

With every spare dollar tied up in the property, building Stonecroft meant learning as he went - digging holes and ramming posts in by hand, doing it all before and after work, and spending weekends slowly turning a vision into reality.

Dr Alan Limmer didn’t set out to become a w**emaker.

A background in earth sciences, chemistry and soil science led him to a research station, a chance friendship with pioneering w**emaker Kim Salonius, and eventually a fascination with what was happening in the vineyard.

Dr Alan Limmer saw something different.

In Episode 2 of Stonecroft Stories, Alan shares how months spent studying soil maps, driving back roads, and knocking on doors led him to the site that would become Stonecroft.

Dr Alan Limmer - the man who planted New Zealand’s oldest Syrah vines.

What started as a single row of cuttings planted in the Gimblett Gravels in 1984 went on to shape much of New Zealand Syrah as we know it today.

In Episode 1 of Stories from Stonecroft, Alan shares how a chance discovery at the Te Kauwhata research station led to the first commercial Syrah released in New Zealand in recent times.
