Would you trust a notification from an app you use every day?

Most of us wouldn't think twice, however, the recent cyber security incident involving ASOS, shows why we should. Customers received an unauthorised notification through the retailer's official app following unauthorised activity involving third-party communication platforms.

It's a timely reminder for all of us that messages from familiar apps and services - whether as an email, text message or even a Teams notifications are not always safe.

Before clicking a link, it's best to take a moment and ask:

> Was I expecting this message?

> Does the request seem unusual?

> Am I being encouraged to act immediately?

> Can I check that it's legitimate another way?

Pausing and taking a few moments to verify an unexpected request is an important part of cyber security and can help protect you and your business.

To finish Cyber Smart Week, here are three questions worth asking before anything goes wrong.

If a scam got through today, who would you call? Which accounts or systems would need checking first? Could you restore the information your team needs?

These aren’t a full plan. They’re a starting point for a short conversation with your team. Save the image and talk them through this week.

If you’re unsure of the answers, talk to Cloudservices. We’ll help you work through them.

You click a link in a work email. Something about the page doesn’t look right.

Stop using it and contact your IT team straight away. Explain what you clicked, when it happened, and whether you entered a password or downloaded anything.

You don’t need to be certain it was a scam before reporting it. Those details help your IT team decide what to check next.

This Cyber Smart Week, make sure your staff know who to contact and feel comfortable speaking up.

Protect Home base
Cyber security doesn’t stop when you leave the office.
(Who else is listening to you?)

When you’re at home, your work laptop shares a network with your phone, TV, smart speakers and other connected devices. Keeping that network secure helps protect both home and work.

Here’s how you can secure your home Wi-Fi:
• Change your router’s default password to a long, strong and unique passphrase
• Keep your router and connected devices updated
• Consider using a guest network for visitors and smart devices
• Being cyber smart is a good habit, wherever you are.

Keep it current
Putting off that update? Don’t.

Cyber criminals look for weaknesses in outdated software to get into your devices, and AI is helping them find and exploit those weaknesses faster than ever.

Updates help close those gaps by fixing known security vulnerabilities.

Turn on automatic updates for your devices, apps and browsers, so you get the latest security fixes as soon as they’re available.

Stay current. Stay protected.

Keep it to yourself
Scams thrive on sensitive information. The less cybercriminals can find, the less they can use against you or your customers.
(This selfie is sharing more than an office friendship!)

Not everything needs to be shared. Check who can see your social media, and think carefully before giving sensitive information to an AI tool.
• Check your social media privacy settings
• Think before sharing sensitive information with AI tools
• Before you post or paste, ask: would I be happy
if this became public?

The more scammers know about you, the easier you are to target.

Remember, scammers can’t use information they don’t have.

An urgent message appears to come from your boss. It asks you to make a payment or share a file, and it sounds like something they would say.

Before acting, call them on a number you already have. Don't verify through the channel you're already using. Better to be safe than sorry. Make sure to double check the details of payments and sharing of important documents.

For Cyber Smart Week, share this rule with anyone in your team who handles payments or sensitive information.

Don't take the bait
Can you spot the scam?
(Sorry, it’s not really Brad Pitt)

AI is making scams more convincing than ever, so treat any unexpected request as suspicious.

Think before you click:
• Check who the message is really from
• Be wary of unexpected or urgent requests.

A website asks you to prove you’re human by pasting a command into your computer. Would your team know to stop?

This scam, known as ClickFix, uses fake verification prompts to trick people into running commands that can install malicious software.

A genuine website verification check should never ask you to open Run, PowerShell or Terminal and paste a command.

If you see this request, close the tab and report it to your IT provider. If you’ve already run the command, disconnect from Wi-Fi and any network cable, stop using the device, and contact IT from another device immediately.

Swipe through for the warning signs and what to do. Share this with your team so they know what to look out for.

Lock it down
How secure are your accounts?
(Don’t be this guy!)

Advancing technology makes it easier than ever for scammers to crack simple passwords.

These two simple actions can keep out the majority of online attacks:
• Use long, strong and unique passphrases for your important accounts
• Turn on Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) wherever you can.
