The gift and challenge of communication and vulnerability.
If you've followed me for a while you know that one of my full circle topics is
communication. It's not an exaggeration to say that almost everything I talk about
comes back to the gift and challenge of communication and vulnerability.
I'm sure you have heard the expression just be yourself. Quoted by many mothers and
grandmothers across multiple generations. Yes, he says loudly! Always be yourself even
if other people don't get it.
I recently had an experience in which I was talking to an acquaintance, having a
conversation which was full of banter. As the conversation progressed, I made a
comment that I thought was simply a play on words. And they became upset.
And that has had me thinking about the ongoing waltz between intent and interpretation. That's always the risk: sometimes you show up and act like you, and people say no.
The point is that sometimes people will misconstrue you when you show up. The other side is that some people won't. Please keep showing up.

My sister gets some of the credit for this one. She hated seeing people judged for anything treated as part of their character or culture, and if it limited people she was the first to point it out. That's most of the reason I have such a disdain for labels.

Is this value still important to me? What new ideas should I take on to participate more effectively in my community? The answers are allowed to change.
