From the solid platform of Midwest Machinery which was established in the 1980’s, Nevada came into being. They identified the New Zealand dairy industry as being of global importance and that sustainable dairy effluent management is integral to the industry success. Drawing from their experience and motivated by the passion to provide farmers with much needed Safe and Reliable dairy effluent equipment, the team procured, invented and developed products to fulfill this niche. Small steps in the early days became giant leaps in the 21st century, when new unique products were added to the range, and market share increased dramatically. Nowadays, Nevada is regularly and efficiently producing proven and trusted dairy effluent pond equipment for dairy farmers. Its leading edge design and focus on detail have made it the front runner in its industry.

Three full rounds of the farm with effluent each year.

Running 320 cows at peak, Ben Johnson and Mackenzie Priest-Johnson can now spread approximately three times the volume they managed with their previous system over an eight-hour period.

At their chosen application rate, nutrient testing indicated approximately 32 kg/ha of nitrogen, 4 kg/ha of phosphorus and 15 kg/ha of potash.

The results are specific to their effluent and application rate, but they put real numbers behind the nutrients being returned to the farm.

400 bales in a normal season. Just over 800 that year.

John Duindam described it as a “green drought” on his farm in Tasmania. The paddocks were green, but growth had slowed right down.

He kept getting effluent out with the slurry tanker and when the rain eventually came, “it shot away.”

With El Niño back in the conversation, John’s story is a good reminder to make the most of the nutrients you’ve already got sitting on farm.

On their Riversdale, Southland farm, Ben says the pasture growth following their effluent applications gave him the confidence to pull back on synthetic nitrogen inputs and save cash flow.

After that amount of use, Mackenzie says there’s no way they could see themselves going back to the old system.

Ben’s verdict: “Job done.”

Cutting Synthetic Nitrogen with Dairy Effluent | Two Seasons On

More than 1,000 tanker loads later, we returned to Ben Johnson and his daughter, Mackenzie Priest-Johnson, on their Riversdale farm to see what their Nevada effluent system is delivering.

In one season, Ben says they cut two full rounds of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser while producing 10,000 kg more milk solids.

They now complete three full-farm effluent rounds each year, making better use of the nutrients already sitting in their pond.

For Ben and Mackenzie, it is no longer just about moving slurry. It is about getting those nutrients back onto the farm.

A lot can happen in two seasons.

Back in 2024, we caught up with Ben & Mackenzie after they'd swapped their hard hose system for a Nevada stirrer and slurry tanker, giving them access to more of the farm and a better way to make use of the nutrients sitting in their pond.

Two seasons on, Grant's been back down south to catch up with them again and see how the gear's been working out. Keep an eye out for their follow up story early next week.

El Niño can increase the risk of drought and dry conditions in parts of New Zealand.

After four consecutive years of drought and hard summers, Ōtorohanga farmer Fabian Pereira used his 12,800L Nevada effluent tanker to return valuable nutrients to his paddocks, often working until 2 or 3am after milking.

His neighbours began asking why his farm was so green. When just 5mm of rain arrived, Fabian says the grass responded quickly and jumped out of the ground.

Effluent application depth and nutrient loading should always be matched to soil conditions, pasture needs and regional council requirements.
