✏Top Tip - language library ✏
Do you find yourself writing about your organisation time and time again? Sometimes get lost for words or short on time? My top tip for today is to create a language library for your non-profit or your project.

When you are feeling particularly articulate open up a word document and create some blurbs, for example...
✏ A 50 word blurb
✏ A 250 word blurb
✏ A formal one
✏ An informal one
✏ A blurb aimed at service users
✏ One aimed at supporters

This is a live document and the blurbs can be updated all the time. If one day you write sometime particularly awesome - pasted it in the language library.
✏Use the blurbs as a base and tailor your writing to the purpose and audience. It helps to form a consistent voice for your non-profit.
✏ Warning! This is not an excuse to get lazy - beware of overuse, suddenly everything you write has the exact same phrases. But if you treat the language library as a starting point when you are stuck for words or you need to pull something together quickly it can help you to work more efficiently.
🤓Finally, use a google doc or something similar and encourage the whole team to get involved so that it's a tool everyone can use.

✏New blog post ✏
The Incorporated Societies Act 1908 is on it's way out and all incorpated societies in Aotearoa are going to need to take action over the next three or four years to be able to continue their mahi.

On my blog I have compiled some korero from people who know the legal lingo (not me!) and have interpreted it on our behalf. I certainly don't pretend to know my way around the law, but these people really do...

I'm keen to hear how you think this is going to impact your organisation, do you consider this to be a positive move? Do you have concerns?

✏Changes afoot for NZ incorporated societies✏
There are changes coming to the Incorporated Societies Act that NZ groups need to be aware of... It’s probably about time as the act was created in 1908!

This will mean that over the next two years all incorporated societies will need to re-visit their constitution to fit in with the new regulations.

Keep your eyes peeled for a blog post from me later in the week about how these changes will affect your society, but in the meantime, I found the podcast in the comments a useful starting point.

💥Random Act of Thanks 💥Have you considered making a weekly random act of thank you to one of your supporters?
Possibly not because I just made up the term.

💥 This is for non-profit leaders, fundraisers and board members and the idea is that you make a weekly spot in your schedule to make a call, unpromted by a gift, to a random supporter to say thank you and have a chat. It might be a grant giver, an indevidual donor, a volunteer. Anyone who gives support to your cause. It's a new idea from me but I think it's a goodie because...

💥You can make your supporters feel wonderful.
💥 You can have a human interaction with a supporter who might otherwise only be a name on a letter.
💥 You can learn more about what motivates their support and what their needs are.
💥 It grounds you as a leader back to the stakeholder perspective.

There's actually so much good stuff here that I will put it into action myself and report back in a blog after a month... watch this space.

What's the #1 thing you can do for your non-profit?
Take a break. Give yourself the gift of some headspace. It's so easy for us non-profiteers to constantly work in a state of overwhelm... but that's not the ideal way to work. When we aren't in a state of stress we are more productive and proactive. Not only that but your team needs to see you prioritize wellbeing too.

So this is a public holiday for us. And while being mindful that it's ANZAC day, I will be taking time out. This was us yesterday at the river down the road from us. The boys snorkelled, the husband whittled and I fossicked.

What's your ideal way to spend a day away from work?

That’s right! I 💘databases!

You heard it here first but it certainly won’t be the last time you hear it from me.
One of the charities that I have worked with for a number of years has asked me to work with them to plan an emergency appeal. As I go through the appeal strategy the first place I turn is the database. The holder of truth. The hub of the relationships the organisation has been nurturing over the years.

The success of the appeal does not hinge on the data the database provides but on the relationships that have been nurtured. But how do we access those relationships? Through the database. How do we establish the right approaches? Through the database. The database is the key to unlock the power of your supporters. Used effectively we can build up a picture of our supporters so that we can get fundraising asks, events invitations and information to the right people, in the right format and with the right tone to have the best possible chance of success.

You can’t just add supporters onto your database and extract them again several years later when the need arises. You need to nurture, inform, thank and engage and right now I am thankful that this organisation has been great at investing time into nurturing their relationships so I can go into the appeal fully tooled up.
