🎉 Fernside Microfarm is turning 5! 🥳

From their first tray of microgreens to a much-loved local microfarm, Michael, Hayley and the team have spent the past five years growing something special here in North Canterbury. 💚

What started as a simple idea to grow good food close to home has grown into a familiar face at the farmers markets, local cafés, restaurants, wineries, and stockists across the region.

In five years they’ve:
🌱 Attended 1,000+ farmers’ markets
🌱 Hand-washed 104,000 growing trays
🌱 Nurtured 138,000 litres of growing medium

Well done! 👏

Their microgreens are also featured across a number of local dishes through The North Course event and continue to be stocked by eateries across the region – a great example of a MADE NORTH CANTERBURY producer in action, supporting and supplying our local food story.

Swipe through to see how far they’ve come – from their very first market stall and first commercial crop, through to today’s harvests, market setups, and fresh local dishes.

To celebrate, you’ll find them at the Matariki markets this weekend with a birthday special on their microgreens! 🌱

📍 Ohoka Farmers' Market – Friday
📍 Amberley Farmers Market – Saturday
📍 Oxford Farmers Market – Sunday

Go grab some microgreens and help them celebrate five years of Fernside Microfarm 🎈🎉

Mel and Cam Booker, owners of Grown bring their fresh seasonal produce each week to both the Ohoka Farmers' Market and Amberley Farmers Market .

Clare Giffard, owner of Urban Revival and Three Streams Café, heads along to the Ohoka Market every Friday morning to handpick fresh produce directly from the stall. That produce then inspires her menus for the week keeping both cafés seasonal, local and full of flavour.

It’s a simple but powerful connection:
Grown locally → sold locally → cooked locally → served locally.

When growers and hospitality businesses stay connected like this, everyone benefits - from the people growing the food, to the chefs creating with it, to the customers enjoying it.

We’d love to see more eateries doing the same! Fresh food, real relationships and a stronger local food story.

📍 Ohoka Market - Every Friday morning 9am till 12.30pm at the Ohoka Domain.
📍 Amberley Farmers' Market - Every Saturday morning 9am till 12.30pm outside the Hurunui District Council buildings.
