Windows 10 End of Support Today – what does it mean.

There is a bit of misinformation floating around about the end of support and what it means.
It most certainly does not have to make your PC any more susceptible to viruses and malware tomorrow than it was yesterday. Microsoft have made extended security updates (ESUs) available for the next year, and you don’t have to pay for them, they are free.
I wrote how to enrol for ESUs earlier, it only takes 2 minutes providing you are logged into a Microsoft account and Windows 10 is up to date.
In addition, Windows Defender for Windows 10 will be updated regularly until 2031.
So if you enrol for ESUs you will not be at greater risk than in the past and upgrades to Windows 11 can wait until this time next year.
If you do upgrade your computer to a Windows 11 compatible machine and want to dispose of your old laptop, let me know I can put them to good use for others.
Contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
Follow me or ahiparatech or Lapup on Facebook to get notified of future developments.

Windows 10 end of Support 14 October 2025
Further to my earlier post about what to do with the approaching end of support for Windows 10, here are the steps to enrol for extended security updates (ESU) which will give you updates until 13 October 2026.
The ESU program enables PCs to continue to receive critical and important security updates for one year, but it doesn’t include new features etc. Note that Windows Defender is still receiving updates until 2031 or later, so you can safely run Windows 10 for some time yet. Once the ESU come to an end, it is possible to upgrade to Windows 11 bypassing the security requirements, or some other operating system such as Chrome OS or a Linux OS.

To enrol for ESU
Ensure you are logged in with a Microsoft Account and not a local account.
In theory you are supposed to log on to OneDrive and back up your PC settings there, but it wasn’t necessary for me to do this.
Go to Settings, Updates and Security, Windows Update. Check for updates and install any updates. Check for updates again.
You should now see a section Windows 10 Support Ends in October 2025 with an option to Enrol Now. Click on that.
Click on Next on the following screen.
Then Enrol for ESU on the following screen.
You should then get the message Your PC is enrolled to get ESU.

If you don’t get the option to enrol, check you are logged in with a Microsoft Account, have done all updates and sign in to OneDrive. If the option to enrol still doesn’t appear I can send you some code to run in cmd as an admin if you’re comfortable with that, or else I can do it for you.

Don't take your unwanted computer equipment to the dump; bring it to LAPUP and we will see if it can be recycled, or alternatively what the best use for it is to keep it out of landfill.
Over 86,000 tonnes of e-waste goes to land fill every year in NZ alone. We will appraise your computer equipment, see if it can be repaired and sold back into the community, broken down and used for spare parts, or as a last resort, sent to Auckland for recovery of precious metals using biometallurgy.
We accept:
all laptops, chromebooks, phone and tablets, any condition working or not.
working desktop/all-in-one computers that originally came with Windows 7 or later and are working.
accessories like mice, cables. keyboards, speakers etc by agreement. Must be working.
Sorry, but no:
Printers.
We are happy to erase all data completely to make data recovery impossible, and we can also recover any data from donated equipment so you can keep your photos and documents forever. No charge for either.Address for drop off is currently 9 Puckey Ave, a storage facility, so you will need to contact me first to arrange a time to drop off.
