Black Stilt Wines

Black Stilt Wines Exceptional wines from a small family owned vineyard in the Waitaki Valley, North Otago

The north facing slopes of the Waitaki Valley provide a home for the Black Stilt vineyard which has been established 100m above the river. Planted over the summer of 2004-2005, it is densely planted (about 5000 vines per hectare) on limestone soils characteristic of the district. The Waitaki Valley is New Zealand’s newest wine region, producing wines of exceptional quality from vineyards planted o

n the southern side of the Waitaki River, inland from Oamaru. The coastal influence extends up the valley from Oamaru in summer, cooling the vineyards in the afternoons and generating a distinctly different climate from that of Central Otago. The name of the vineyard comes from the Black Stilt/Kakī – the world’s rarest wading bird once reduced to 23 individuals, which is now only found in the braided rivers and wetlands in the upper reaches of the valley. Every bottle of Black Stilt wine sold generates financial support for the Black Stilt recovery programme at Twizel in the upper Waitaki Valley.
