Behind the scenes in the last couple of months, we've been quietly working on building our community garden here at Levin Landscape Depot, so I thought it was time for a bit of an update and to put the call out for anyone who might like to get involved.

The garden has come a long way already, and most of the hard work and expense of getting it established has already been done. However, it’s important to mention that the community garden isn’t open for harvesting just yet. We’re still in the building and establishing stage, getting everything planted, organised and ready so that eventually it can become something the whole community can enjoy.

Right now, what we really need are people who would like to be part of helping us build it.

That might mean volunteering some time here and there, helping with planting, weeding, composting or general garden jobs, or even taking on a particular area or role that you’d like to be responsible for. You definitely don’t need to be a gardening expert. If you’d simply like to be involved in creating something for the Levin community, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re also looking for a few local businesses who might like to help us get the garden across the finish line.

There are still some costs involved with the finishing touches, including signage and a few other bits and pieces. We’ve deliberately kept our sponsorship amounts small because we’d love this to be something lots of local businesses can get behind, rather than relying on one big sponsor.

We have three sponsorship levels available:
$150, $75 and $37.50.

Businesses who sponsor the garden will be acknowledged on signage within the community garden, and we’ll also give our supporters shout-outs through the Levin Landscape Depot page from time to time.

We’d particularly love to hear from any local signwriters or signage businesses who might be interested in helping with the signs themselves, either through sponsorship or donating some of the work or materials.

This isn’t about creating a garden where people simply turn up and take produce. The idea is to create a genuine community garden - somewhere people contribute what they can, help look after it, learn from each other and, once it’s established and producing properly, share in what we grow together.

A little update regarding the Community Garden Beds here at Levin Landscape Depot

Firstly, thank you so much for the incredible support, encouragement, and interest so far. It’s been amazing to see people getting behind this idea already 💚

I just wanted to clarify a few things and add a bit more information after some questions were raised yesterday.

A significant amount of money has already been outlaid by individuals involved in getting this project started, along with many volunteer hours already contributed. We still have a way to go before all beds are fully completed, including more materials that still need to be purchased.

Because of this, we are currently looking for sponsorships for the garden beds.

We already have a few wonderful local businesses sponsoring beds already (thank you so much!), and sponsorship is $150 per bed

This sponsorship helps cover the setup costs of building and establishing the gardens for the community.

Francis Donegan will be handling all sponsorship enquiries and organisation, so if you or your business would like to sponsor a full bed - or even contribute towards a partial sponsorship/setup cost of a bed, please contact Francis directly 😊

For those asking about the 10 available paid garden beds:
Bed rental will be $2.50 per week.

Part of the reason for this small rental cost is to help recover some of the money already outlaid into creating the gardens, along with helping towards any ongoing costs in the future such as seedlings, maintenance, and supplies.

Another important reason for the rental structure is that it helps create clear ownership and boundaries around each bed. When someone rents a bed, that space becomes theirs to grow what they would like, care for how they choose, and enjoy as their own little garden space 🌻🥕

It also helps create a respectful understanding that people shouldn’t interfere with or touch other people’s beds, as those spaces are being individually rented and cared for by the people using them.

I also want to clarify something important, as a few people have understandably asked whether this is intended as a commercial venture or community initiative.

None of the sponsorship money or bed rental money will be kept as profit by Levin Landscape Depot. The money collected is simply going towards recovering some of the costs that have already been personally outlaid by the individuals helping build this project, and any additional money will be reinvested back into the gardens in some form — whether that’s seedlings, materials, maintenance, improvements, or helping continue the project long-term 🌱

I also want to gently clarify the boundaries around the project space itself.

This community garden project is something that I, Michelle, have personally decided to make space for within Levin Landscape Depot, which is still a privately owned and operating business on private land.

The initial area allocated to the community gardens is approximately a 10m x 10m section specifically set aside for the garden beds and shared garden space. The remainder of the property is still actively used for business operations, deliveries, machinery, customers, and day-to-day work.

Because of this, we do ask that people respect that the community garden area is limited to the designated space provided, and that any future ideas, additions, planting, structures, or changes outside of that area would need to be discussed first 😊

We want this to be a welcoming, positive, community-focused space where people can learn, grow food, connect with others, and enjoy gardening together - while also respecting that the wider property still needs to function safely and practically as a working business.

Francis is extremely passionate about this project and genuinely loves helping people learn how to grow food and build confidence with gardening. He’ll be around and involved throughout the project to help guide, support, and encourage people along the way 😊

Something pretty special is starting at Levin Landscape Depot 🌱

A little while ago, I (Michelle from Levin Landscape Depot) approached Francis Donegan with an idea I had for creating community veggie gardens here at the depot - a space where people can learn, grow food, share knowledge, and become a little more self-sustainable. Francis was super keen to get involved, and since then he has put a huge amount of time, energy, and passion into helping move this project forward.
Today we officially started building the first garden beds! 👏
Huge thank you to everyone who came down and helped get things underway.
The plan is to create two different types of garden spaces:

🌿 Subscription Garden Beds
We will have a limited number of private raised beds available on a very affordable monthly subscription. These beds will belong to the individual or family for the duration of their subscription and will be set up ready to grow with premium veggie mix supplied by Levin Landscape Depot. Subscribers will also have ongoing access to compost produced onsite through the depot composting system.

🌿 Shared Community Garden Beds
Down the line, we also plan to create shared community beds that anyone can contribute to and benefit from at no cost. The idea behind these beds is simple - if you’d like to take food from them, you also need to contribute in some way. That could mean helping with composting, turning piles, preparing cardboard, weeding, mulching, planting, general upkeep, or other onsite tasks.

The goal is to create something sustainable, fair, and community-driven that benefits everyone.
This project is being built on private land at Levin Landscape Depot, so there will be some rules around access, safety, and operating hours, especially as there is often machinery operating onsite. The area is monitored and we ask everyone to respect the space, the people involved, and the purpose behind the project.
We still have a long way to go, but the vision includes fruit trees, composting systems, educational opportunities, and a place where people can connect, learn, and grow together 🍎🥕🌽

Flax CAN be dropped off, but must be separated
