It has been a while since we've done a post and Facebook keeps reminding us to keep things fresh, so here is a copy of an article published recently in the local newspaper for those of you who aren't living in Selwyn district:

Wolf spiders are one the most numerous invertebrate predators in many environments, but particularly in grasslands where they are viewed as being beneficial. As many as 27 species of wolf spiders or Lycosidae are known in New Zealand. The most common New Zealand species found, usually in modified grasslands such as pastures, gardens and lawns, is Anoteropsis hilaris. They are 8-12mm in length, dark brown in colour with pale yellow through the middle of their body. This species live in a small burrow, do not build webs, and females can often be observed carrying a white egg sac around with them. With good eye sight they are active hunters by day, preying on a range of species, sometimes larger than themselves. This spider is commonly parasitised by a spider wasp which paralyses the spider and lays a single egg in it, which develops inside its body until death.
