In a first for the industry, in March 2026 we launched a new initiative to safely remove and recycle ozone depleting gases from refrigeration and air conditioning units at our Wellington branch.

Glen Jacobs, our National Operations Manager explains: “In accordance with Regulations 6.23 and 15.66 of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017, our people have been trained and now hold official certification as Approved Fillers. This means ozone-depleting gases that could have been released into the atmosphere are now safely recovered at Macaulay’s metal recycling facility in Seaview.”

With support and training from Jason Roberts at Skillsure, we invested in our own recovery machine and began removing hazardous gases from end-of-life fridges, freezers, and air conditioning units.

The team at Macaulay want to highlight a few reminders for visitors to our Buying Sheds to help make everyone’s experience efficient and safe:

1) Please treat our staff with courtesy and respect – we do not tolerate verbal or physical threats or abuse;

2) It is a requirement under our operating license that we verify the identities of people we purchase metal from – please don’t be offended if you are asked for your ID!

3) We do not buy items which we suspect may have been stolen and will ask questions to understand the source of materials if we have concerns;

4) Smile! You’re on camera from the moment you step onto our sites and this footage is reviewed regularly by management and may be provided to Police if required.

Please contact your local Branch Manager or email us on [email protected] if you wish to discuss any aspect of this notice.

Thank you.

We are incredibly proud to announce that we have just achieved our Toitū Enviromark Gold certification.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do so the programme is a natural fit to ensure we continue to build momentum, inspire change and take credible action towards minimising environmental impacts and maximising what can be recycled!
