Welcome to 2025, now that the dust has settled, its time to look at what the year ahead looks like for Cosmos.

Well for a start we have relocated to the deep South! That's right! back home to roost and set up a more sustainable practice. Being a Southern girl at heart LJ still has good old Southern hospitality in life and business.

Our journey is based on the changes we make in life.

Wellington is where Cosmos was born into the business world and here in the deep South we are looking for opportunities to work with organisations and business owners in the Otago region.

Watch out Otago, we are super excited to catch up with our clients down here and to connect with new employers, organisations and network groups focused on community connection and support.

It's going to be a fabulous year!

As the Chairperson of Southend Business Group and business owner of Cosmos Business Services I felt compelled to give a written and verbal submission to local council on the impact of proposed alcohol license fee increases to the hospitality sector.

The impact of the proposed fees will affect outlets in a current economy that is under immense stress to operators and most end consumers with little disposable income.

It also impacts me as a business owner who frequents local hospitality outlets for network and business meetings. Most of my business spends cannot be claimed back for business/ network events in hospitality as it's classed as entertainment so I can only claim a portion of that through my business.

Outlets have no choice but to pass on the extra cost to their customers when their overheads increase. Hospitality operates on very small margins and relies on high volumes of sales. Irrelevant of if I buy alcohol or not when onsite.

As it stands end consumers of certain demographics will purchase liquor from wholesale outlets, preload on the drinks at home and then go out to licensed venues for entertainment and not purchase any drinks or food.

This is a risk that exposes the outlet to a binge drinking culture of end consumers at home only to be turned away by outlets as responsible hosts by not allowing intoxicated people to enter their premises. A risk that must be managed at no fault of the hospitality outlet.

I emphasised the ripple effect the proposed fees will have from the outlet owner and end consumers.

I am so passionate about my business community and choose to allocate my time as a volunteer for wrap around support to all business owners in my region.

My goal is to be an advocate for business owners and local council on creating a thriving community with a dedicated team of volunteers in our organisation and as a business woman who trades with integrity.

A collective voice singing from the same song book is stronger than standing alone.
