Devotus Wine

Devotus Wine WE ARE DEVOTED TO PINOT NOIR. SMALL, FAMILY OWNED AND ORGANIC. WE GROW ONLY PINOT NOIR, NOTHING ELSE. We grow only Pinot Noir, nothing else.

Inspired by the traditions of the old world, we are devoted winegrowers of the new world. The name Devotus is Latin, and refers to the devotion we have for Pinot Noir. Our small 3 hectare family owned and operated vineyard is located within the heart of the Martinborough Terrace, New Zealand. The vines are old and deep-rooted, being some of the earliest planted Pinot Noir vines in New Zealand. All

the work in the organic vineyard is done by hand. We cultivate our non-irrigated old vines and coax them into growing very low yields of highly concentrated fruit. The vinification process is performed with a non-interventionist mindset, working with wild yeasts, no or low sulphur additions, and with no fining or filtering.

No irrigation water.
No herbicide weedkiller.

Ploughing eliminates weeds without using chemicals, and also removes shallow vine roots, to promote deep set vine roots, hence allowing for the dry farming of our vines.

No wasted water, no toxic chemicals, smaller crops, better wine, no brainer.

The vineyard never stops working. As the vines naturally begin their shutdown process in preparation for winter, the Blue Lupin, seeded in February, is bolting ahead as a winter cover crop. It acts as a green manure crop, naturally fixing atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, which will be available to the vine once the cover crop is ploughed in. Biodiversity. Nature. Loving our land.
