Whātonga Bilingual Book Series

Our three-level bilingual series tells the story of our ancestor Whātonga and his journey from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. Each book has been created by Te Whare Taiao o Rangitāne to support schools, whānau and communities to engage with our local history, whakapapa and whenua.

The series includes junior, middle and senior levels, with each one written in both te reo Māori and English. These books sit alongside classroom learning, kōrero in the home and wider iwi-led education.

Matua Mike Kāwana is well known as a rangatira, a tohunga and a kaumātua. Today, he can add “Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit” to the list.🏅

“We are delighted with the acknowledgement of Matua Mike in the King’s Birthday Honours for 2026” says Sonya Rīmeme, Chair of Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā. He has been a pillar for our iwi and our community over many, many years and this is an appropriate recognition of his service.🌟👑🎉

“Alongside his contribution to our iwi and our marae, Matua Mike has a longstanding association with the New Zealand Police and the Department of Corrections, and is a supporter of our local Māori Wardens ” says Ms Rīmeme. “We also want to acknowledge his partner Erana and their whānau for sharing their husband, dada and granddad with us”.❤️
