🌿 Māori Tourism Haerenga – Taupō | Day 3 🌿

Day 3 and the final day of our Māori Tourism Haerenga – another awesome day of kōrero, connections, plenty of laughs and learning from some of the best in Māori tourism. 🙌🏽✨

📍 Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board

We started the morning with Rakeipoho Taiaroa (Rakei), CEO of the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board, who shared the Tūwharetoa tourism journey with us.

Rakei acknowledged that our Rangitāne rohe is blessed with plenty of lush green grass… so naturally we offered to trade some of it for a bit of their geothermal whenua. 👀😂🌱♨️

Rakei shared the progress Ngāti Tūwharetoa has made in the tourism sector, including their investment into and acquisition of significant tourism assets across their rohe – all while ensuring their cultural values remain at the heart of their development.

We also got to check out the extensive improvements at Tūwharetoa-owned Hole in One Golf – including a new shooting option for those of us whose golfing ability might be better left untested! 😂⛳🎯 Even better, the whānau at the café looked after us with some outstanding kai and drinks. ☕🥐

📍 Kai Waho | Tom Loughlin

Next up we had the privilege of sitting down with Tom Loughlin from Kai Waho, who walked us through his bespoke, world-renowned wilderness and culinary experience.

Operating on tribal whenua near Taupō, Kai Waho combines kai gathering, open-fire cooking, storytelling and tikanga Māori to create something truly unique.

Tom's passion for our ngahere, our kai and our culture was captivating. 🌿🔥🍽️ It was easy to see how manuhiri would gravitate towards both him and his pakihi – another great reminder that authentic Māori tourism starts with our own people, passions, stories and connection to place.

And what better way to finish the haerenga than with a bit of action! 🚤💦😂

Our team was treated to a session with Rapids Jet Taupō, owned and operated by Tauhara North No. 2 Trust.

What an awesome way to wrap up three days of learning, whanaungatanga and inspiration.

A massive ngā mihi to everyone who opened their doors, shared their stories and hosted our Rangitāne whānau throughout this haerenga. ❤️

We are genuinely humbled by the manaaki shown to us and by how willing our Māori tourism whānau have been to share their experiences, mātauranga, successes and lessons with us.

The purpose of this haerenga was to learn from leading Māori tourism businesses and consider what those lessons could mean for the future of Rangitāne and Pūkaha. We return home with our kete much fuller, some exciting ideas, and most importantly, new and strengthened relationships. 🌿🦜

We look forward to the opportunity to return the manaaki and host you all one day at our special place – Pūkaha. ❤️

🌿 Māori Tourism Haerenga – Te Arawa | Day 1 🌿

He rā whakahirahira! 🙌🏽 Day 1 of our Māori Tourism Haerenga into Te Arawa, learning from some of the best in the kaupapa Māori tourism space as we continue to explore and shape our own tourism offering at Pūkaha. 🌿🦜

A huge mihi to our hoa at NZ Māori Tourism, and particularly Matt Ammunson-Fyall – our Rangitāne whanaunga – and Tyla Farani-Watene for facilitating this haerenga and bringing us all together. 🤝🏽

📍 First stop – Whakarewarewa Village

We were privileged to be hosted by Tanya and the awesome team at Whakarewarewa Village. A very special mihi to our Rangitāne whanaunga, Matua John Turi, for the incredible manaaki and kōrero as he guided us through the village. ❤️🖤

📍 Next stop – Te Pā Tū

From there we headed to Te Pā Tū, hosted by the whānau of Tauhara North No. 2 Trust. Ngā mihi nui ki a Kiri, Jamus and the entire team for opening your doors to us and sharing your world-class cultural experience with our Rangitāne whānau. 🔥✨

There is so much value in seeing how others have brought together culture, whakapapa, whenua, manaakitanga and tourism in ways that are authentic, sustainable and unapologetically Māori.

As we explore the future of our tourism offering at Pūkaha, these relationships, shared experiences and connections are imperative to our success. We have plenty to learn, but also plenty of our own to share. 🌿🦜

✨RANGITĀNE TŪ MAI RĀ SETTLEMENT CELEBRATES 10 YEARS✨

Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā is celebrating ten years since it completed its historic Deed of Settlement with the Crown on 6 August 2016 at Mākirikiri Marae in Dannevirke.

“This is an important milestone for us” says Sonya Rīmene, Chair of Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā. “Our elders spent decades before the Waitangi Tribunal and negotiating with the Crown. We celebrate their achievements and reflect on our journey over the last ten years”.

“Our settlement was not perfect. We did not achieve all the things we aspired to in our negotiations with the Crown. However, it did mean that we could move from grievance mode to becoming masters of our own destiny” says Sonya Rīmene. “We have been able to grow our asset base, support our people and grow our connections and our presence in our community. There is much to celebrate”.

“Having reached this milestone, we can reflect on the ups and downs along the way and plan for our next decade of growth and development. We are committed to our whānau, we are committed to supporting the future of Wairarapa and Tamaki-nui-ā-Rua. We look forward with optimism”.

✨️Tonight, in Tauranga Moana at Te Puna Tahua Toa Māori Accountants Conference, Joe Hanita, Chair of Tū Mai Rā Investments was awarded the Hikitoa award.🏆

In front of his peers of more than 250 Māori Accountants and professionals a motu, our Joe accepted his award with impeccable grace and humility.👏

🏆The Hikitoa Award is presented to outstanding individuals that role model exemplary leadership in te Ao Maori, accountancy and beyond.

Over the 20 years that the Mäori Accountants Conference has been held Hikitoa has only been awarded 3 previous times.

✨️The inaugural recipients were Sir Henare Ngata and Ahorangi Whatarangi Winiata. In 2024, it was awarded to Hinerangi Raumati Tu'ua.

Joe joins an illustrious group of outstanding Mäori leaders as the 2026 recipient.

🎉Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā congratulates Joe on this wonderful achievement capping off a successful month following his appointment and pohiri as the Group CFO of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu.

Descendants of Kurahaupō, including members of Muaūpoko, Rangitāne and Ngāti Apa, gathered at Kohuturoa Marae, directly overlooking the lake, to return the waka to the guardianship of Muaūpoko.
