Waiwaste is a Food Rescue Organisation that rescues edible food products from food suppliers which is surplus or would otherwise be discarded. Waiwaste rescues food from suppliers that is good enough to eat but not good enough to sell, or surplus to need โ€“ fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery products and sandwiches, frozen or fresh mea

t, dairy products, fresh eggs, prepackaged foods and non-alcoholic beverages. Rescued food is given to foodbanks throughout the Wairarapa and other charitable organisations who feed people in need. Strict health and safety regulations are followed in our collection and distribution of rescued foods. We also welcome food that local people have in excess - from their gardens, fruit trees or nonperishable, unopened food from their kitchen cupboards. Waiwaste is keen to hear from food producers and businesses who have food that is no longer viable for selling, and from reliable volunteers who can help with the collection of food regularly.

Rob & Gary have a question...

Are these apples, or are they pumpkins in disguise? ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ˜‚

These giant beauties arrived through New Zealand Food Network and definitely turned a few heads around the team. Thanks to NZFN for the fresh produce and the unexpected photo opportunity!

๐Ÿ“ธ What's the biggest piece of fruit you've ever seen?

P.S. No apples were harmed in the making of this photo. ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ˜‰

We're running low on egg cartons and would love your help!

If you have any clean, empty egg cartons or trays, we'd be so grateful if you could drop them off at Waiwaste. We use them to repackage rescued eggs so they can be safely shared with people in our community.

๐Ÿ’ง Save 10.4 million litres of water
๐Ÿ’š Rescue food with an estimated retail value of $113,599

๐Ÿ‘€Did you see the news last week?

The proposed Waste Minimisation (Food Waste) Amendment Bill is an exciting opportunity to reduce food waste and strengthen food rescue across Aotearoa.
The Member's Bill would require large supermarkets to prioritise the prevention of food waste, establish agreements with food rescue organisations to donate edible surplus food wherever practicable, and make reasonable efforts to divert inedible food from landfill through alternatives such as composting or animal feed.

Food rescue organisations like Waiwaste already play a vital role in ensuring good food reaches people rather than ending up in landfill. Over the past year, we have redistributed more than 168,000kg of surplus food, supporting local communities while reducing waste and emissions. This proposed legislation has the potential to build on the strong partnerships that already exist between supermarkets and the food rescue sector, helping to reduce waste, lower emissions, and support communities experiencing food insecurity.

Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance Executive Director Alice Cameron says:
"Good legislation doesn't just require more food be donated. It provides the resources, protections and practical support needed for more food to be rescued and distributed to those who need it, well." Read AFRA's media release in the comments. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Together, we can create a more circular food system where good food is valued, shared, and kept out of landfill.

Over the past fortnight, we've had the pleasure of welcoming Matt Shepherd for the Wairarapa. to Waiwaste to experience firsthand what food rescue is all about

We didn't let him stand on the sidelines either! ๐Ÿ’ช Matt joined us for supermarket collections, farm pick-ups, deliveries to our recipient organisations, and recipient pick-ups back at base. Safe to say he got a real taste of what a typical day at Waiwaste looks like.

A huge thank you, Matt, for taking the time to learn about the work we do and why it's so important. We really appreciate you rolling up your sleeves, pitching in wherever needed, and contributing plenty of muscle along the way!

It was fantastic to have you on the team, even if only for a few days. Thanks for your support of Waiwaste and the Wairarapa community. ๐Ÿ’š
