Waiwaste is a Food Rescue Organisation that rescues edible food products from food suppliers which is surplus or would otherwise be discarded. Waiwaste rescues food from suppliers that is good enough to eat but not good enough to sell, or surplus to need – fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery products and sandwiches, frozen or fresh mea

t, dairy products, fresh eggs, prepackaged foods and non-alcoholic beverages. Rescued food is given to foodbanks throughout the Wairarapa and other charitable organisations who feed people in need. Strict health and safety regulations are followed in our collection and distribution of rescued foods. We also welcome food that local people have in excess - from their gardens, fruit trees or nonperishable, unopened food from their kitchen cupboards. Waiwaste is keen to hear from food producers and businesses who have food that is no longer viable for selling, and from reliable volunteers who can help with the collection of food regularly.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Shelter Masterton - Whare Manaaki to deliver warm blankets for the men they support.

These blankets were made possible through an amazing collaboration between Briscoes, New Zealand Food Network and The Salvation Army. We're grateful to have played a small part in helping get them where they're needed most.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who helped make this possible. Together, we're creating warmer, stronger communities.

📊 The Hunger Monitor Report was developed by New Zealand Food Network to better understand the growing reality of food insecurity across Aotearoa.

As community organisations and foodbanks continue seeing rising demand for support, the report was created to gather reliable national data on:
🥫 how many households are struggling to access enough food
📈 what’s driving food insecurity
🤝 who is being affected
🏘️ and the increasing pressure on community support services

The goal is to ensure future decisions, funding, and responses are guided by real evidence and lived experiences — helping communities respond more effectively to hunger across New Zealand.

Food insecurity is impacting more people than many realise, including working families, seniors, students, and whānau doing their best to get by.

🥕🌿 Community heroes come in many forms.

A huge shout out to the incredible locals who quietly share fresh fruit, veggies and homegrown goodness from their own gardens with Waiwaste. Every bag of beans, box of apples, bunch of silverbeet or surplus zucchini helps put fresh, healthy kai into the hands of people across our community.

These donations may start in a backyard garden, but the impact reaches far beyond the fence line. 💚

Thank you to our everyday unsung heroes for growing kindness and sharing abundance.

🐾 We’re excited to officially welcome Chance 4 Change aboard as one of our community partners!

Chance4Change are a non-for-profit dog rescue making a real difference in the lives of unwanted, neglected, and abused dogs across the Wairarapa. Alongside their rescue work, they also support the wider community through food drives and practical assistance for families and pet owners in need.

We’re proud to be working alongside organisations that care deeply for both people and animals, and we look forward to supporting each other to strengthen our community together. 🐶💚

Please join us in giving Chance4Change a warm welcome!

A huge thank you to Molewood Orchard and the Year 9 & 10 students from Ponatahi Christian School for an incredible community effort on Monday!

The students spent the day picking apples at Molewood Orchard in Greytown, resulting in an amazing 750kg donation that we are grateful to receive and share with whānau across the Wairarapa.

A special thank you also to Waiwaste volunteers Bruce and Owen for collecting the apples, bringing them back to base, and loading up the chiller ready for distribution.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved for your generosity and hard mahi! 🍏🍎
