When I worked for an environmental agency in my early adulthood I recall one of the scientists telling me our oceans are in serious trouble but sadly as humanity can't see the damage happening to flora and fauna under the sea and sea creatures weren't 'cute and fluffy' that we were unlikely to take action to change the way we treat our oceans until it is too late.
