With the new season just around the corner it’s time to analyse what has worked or needs tweaking. Looking back what could you or your team have done better ? What goals do you have moving forward ? What goals were achieved in the 23/24 year ? Don’t be too hard on yourself or others, instead learn the lessons and look to improve for next year.
Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can see whats been staring you in the face but has been in your blind spot .

With the lift in the farm gate milk price yesterday it’s time to update those budgets .
Remember to factor in the new information not just as a total lift but as advance rates adjusting over the coming months your cash flow will do as well.

There’s been a lot of volatility in not only the payouts of milk companies in the last few months but also grass growth .
Make sure you’re not only updating your financial budgets but also your feed budgets as well. Capturing surpluses and identifying feed deficits can be just as crucial as monitoring cash flow for your business .

With moving day/s upon us there’s always things that can make the madness a little less hectic. You may already be ultra prepped but from experience here’s a few short sharp tips.

1. Don’t refuse help. Delay it or set a job list up to help people who are arriving keep up with the play instead of everyone checking with you what’s next and what goes where and with who.

2. Take photos of how you left the place as sometimes there can be a lot of they said one thing and they said another . Also take photos of your new premises, this will save any arguments if and when you move on.
The camera can be your best tool to help avoid any miss communication or damage that may happen post your shift.

3. Make sure to have plenty of sustenance on hand. Museli bars and flasks of tea/ coffee are a god send when everything is packed away.

4. Give yourself time to settle in , going out fixing fences and do a full rebuild in the cowshed on day 1 won’t help anyone. Get your bearings, get your things in order at home.

5. Finally.
Find out the local fish and chips show number , no one wants to cook after a long day packing and unpacking.

With the season slowly coming to an end and heifers returning home. Revisit or create a feed budget. Sometimes the return of young stock to the milking platform is the extra demand that starts chewing into those winter covers especially if you’re still milking .
As the days get shorter and the temperatures cooler we will see a slowing down of growth rates.
Simple data such as supply( growth / amount of supplement on hand ) vs demand ( cows supplement allowance , grass intake ).
These figures can give you a simple snapshot of what’s happening and what the decisions need to be made moving through winter and into spring .

With Christmas time and the public holidays that accompany them fast approaching make sure to book in relief staff so you and your staff have a good break away. Make sure the roster is updated and shared amongst everyone.
Some things can be altered on farm if staffing is an issue. Maybe looking at switching to Once a Day or 3/2 to give everyone a slightly longer break between milking's or to help use the staff you have more efficiently to allow people a few days to recharge.
