One challenge our industry doesn't talk about enough is retaining experience.
When labour is short, experienced staff, supervisors, contractors, and managers become essential.
When labour becomes plentiful again, many skilled people are replaced by cheaper options, leaving years of knowledge and experience behind.
Some move into trucking, transport, construction, or other industries where their skills and loyalty are valued year-round.
Then, when the next labour shortage arrives, we wonder where all the experienced people went.
Strong orchards are built by strong people.
Maybe the future of our industry isn't just about growing bigger crops. It's also about creating enough continuity, respect, and opportunity to keep good people in horticulture for the long term.
