Forty years in. Still getting his hands (and feet) dirty. Still chasing the best expression of a single grape variety from a single region, because he genuinely believes Hawke's Bay Chardonnay can front it with the best in the world.

We believe him.

Vinyl Day again this Sunday, 1pm till 5pm. Rockstuff bring the crates through, someone always finds a record they didn't know they needed, and the afternoon rolls on from there.

That's the whole plan. Records, w**e, no rush.

This year we're excited about our lot. Very excited.

After 34 years, the Hawke's Bay W**e Auction is the oldest w**e auction in New Zealand and the single biggest annual donor to Cranford Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care to families across our region, completely free of charge. Since 1991 it has raised more than five million dollars for that work. Tony Bish W**es has been part of it for many of those years, and we wouldn't miss it.

If you want a first look before the main event, the Auckland Preview and Tasting is on 28 July at Caro's W**e Merchants in Grey Lynn. The Napier Preview follows on 18 August. Tickets for the auction itself are on sale now.

Saturday 12 September. Toitoi Hawke's Bay Arts and Events Centre.

We'll be there. Bidding, celebrating, and quietly hoping to bring something special home ourselves.
