Naseby Forest Recreation Area

Naseby Forest Recreation Area Ernslaw One's Naseby Forest Recreation Area has historical mining sites, walking & mountain bike tracks. Poachers will be prosecuted. Safety is our first policy.

Ernslaw One is part of the Oregon Group, owned by the Malaysian based Tiong family, along with its subsidiary company and processing arm, Winstone Pulp International. The owners are committed to sustainable forestry in New Zealand, they demonstrate this by reinvesting all company earnings back into the New Zealand operation. Ernslaw One are great supporters of the Naseby community through their co

ntinued allowance of the use of over 500 ha of Forest for recreational use and the support of the Maniototo Adventure Park through donation of the land for the indoor curling rink and kindly allowing the winter ice luge and Goldrush luge the use of land for operations. Each year Ernslaw One also supports the use of the Recreation area for events held in the forest, these include Mountain Bike races, MTBO 12 hr, the Great Naseby Water Race and Orienteering events. The Naseby Forest was planted on top of the original gold sluicing area and is logged and replanted sustainably. The Recreation Area consists of gold mining historic sites, approximately 53 km's of walking & mountain biking tracks including the Water Race track, swimming and fishing dams, picnic areas, toilets are open in the summer at the Coalpit Dam. There is some car parking available up Coalpit Rd at the Coalpit and Hoffmans Dams, otherwise all public vehicles, motorbikes and ATV's are prohibited within the Forest Recreation Area. The Naseby Forest Recreation Area entrances are found at Coalpit Road, Wet Gully Road, Swimming Dam Road and Hogburn on Broom street. Please check at these main entrances or on this page (msgs welcome) or call the Forest Manager on 021 991 930 (or the Naseby Office 03 4449 995 between 9am & 4pm) for closures, alternatively check at town information boards or local businesses if the forest is open before entering. The Sandpit Recreation Area opposite the Wet Gully road and with another entrance on Channel road just past the Curling Rink, is usually unaffected by Extreme fire danger closures over summer, so users have an alternative place to walk and bike. Please check it is not closed due to other forest operations like logging first. Alternatively, Naseby and the wider Maniototo have plenty of other things to do like swim at the swimming dam next to the Camping ground, Mt Buster road is always open for mountain biking, tramping and walking, there is curling, golfing, lawn bowls, the Rail Trail is close by and museums and pubs usually open in Naseby or take a drive or 4WD trip to the other beautiful Maniototo areas. The Forest Recreation Area of the Naseby forest is mapped clearly and signed including the walking & mountain bike tracks and can be found on main entrance signs and entries to tracks, please stick to these tracks to protect tree stands, waterways and historical sites. All boundaries to the outer working forest are well indicated and signed, please comply with Recreation Area boundaries for your and forest workers safety. Trespassing into the working part of the forest may result in prosecution. Please be a considerate user and give way on trails, slow down, stop and look for traffic on all Recreation Area forest roads, slow down when driving on Coalpit /Hoffmans road, this is not just for others safety but for yours as well. Please see our photos here for Recreation Area maps or you can enquire at the Naseby Forest Office and some accommodation providers have them also. Events are held in the forest including the MBO 12 hour race, Orienteering events, the Great Naseby Water Race. All events are subject to permission and can be arranged through the Naseby Forest Office. Commercial use of the forest is by concession only, there are currently no concessions so no-one should be operating commercially within the forest at the moment. Hunting in the Naseby Forest is by permit only, enquire at the Naseby office. FOREST CLOSURE: During EXTREME fire danger, (there is a Fire Danger Indicator Sign on the road into Naseby) or during logging or pest control, the forest may be closed for safety. Please respect these closures. Signs are put up at all main gates, on information boards and local businesses notified if the forest is closed. Fire danger weather and notifications of forest closure will also be posted on this page. Naseby is a "Light No Fires" area and Ernslaw One Ltd hopes you enjoy making use of the Naseby Forest Recreation Area while keeping our forest a "Fire Safe" forest and keep it clean and green by putting all rubbish and dog waste in the bins provided or take it out with you. Just three of the special things about our wee slice of paradise.
🌲Peaceful Forest to walk, MTB, fish or just hang out in.
🌌Big blue (or dark milkyway) skies with some awesome cloud displays.
🐑And the golden tussocks of the high country farmlands.

Late morning sun and shadows highlight the dew, rising steam or crunchy frosts no matter where you decide to spend your time or in the view your enjoying this time of year.

Enjoy your weekend😊

Yesterday Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a water tank on fire! 💧

How can that happen?

The homeowner had some ashes from their fireplace; they had waited a few days for them to cool before disposing of them in their compost bin next to the tank. Unfortunately a few days was not long enough!

🔥Hot tip: Ashes can take up 5 days to cool completely! We recommend hot ashes are emptied into a metal bin, water is poured over them and they are left to cool completely for 5 days.
